credit rebuilding

We had credit cards balences discharged in BK from Capital One, Orchard Bank, FNMB. Question: does anyone know if we would be approved for another card from either of these companies now? We plan to wait a short time as we are trying to clear up our credit reports. We would like to not go into debt again at all, but it seems you have to have a credit card these days. Also, if all we can get is a secured card, are there any out there with small amounts needed to start one?
