Got a call from Federal Trade Center

Before I decided to file chapter 7 I tried one of those debt settlement places. I only lost about 500 dollars before I realized it was a bunch of bull. Back in August I filed a complaint with the BBB. I basically told them my story and just thought that they should give me at least a partial refund to be fair since they werent totally truthful with me. So when they finally got back to me they said that they looked into it and the company said that they had no record of me ever being a client. So the guy who was really nice wanted to look into it more but I said not to bother. I just told him that I have three kids and the amount of money I lost wasnt even worth the frustration or the time to deal with it. So now three months later I get a call on Friday night from this guy who says he is with the goverment.The caller id said Federal Trade Center so I know its not a joke. He said that they have a law suit going with this company and they want to fly me to California in February to be a possible witness if it gets as far as court. So now im a nervous wreak. There is no way I could take off to California for a few days. I have a job and three kids who I have never even left for one night. Im also afraid to fly. So what do you guys think? Can they make me go?

They can't make you take the trip if it is going to cause undue hardship to you/your family. But you have to show that it will cause undue hardship to you and your family.

I may be a little more paranoid than most, but remember that just because your caller ID says something, doesn't mean that's who is calling you. There are methods available to call someone and make any name/number you choose pop up on their ID. Always get an official number from a website or advertisement and call back if someone is calling you asking for personal information.

Also, the Federal Trade COMMISSION would be the appropriate govt agency to be officially working on a case like this. Are you sure the caller ID said Federal Trade Center?

If this is from the real FTC, ask them if you can give your testimony via telephone or through a videotape that they can come to your town to do.

Hi lrprn! Your right! It is Commission. I dont know where I got center from. That is a good idea to ask about. Thank you! I guess there is no sense in worring just yet. He said that I was put on a list of possible witnesses and that if I was chosen he would be in contact by February.
