How bad does your credit have to be to affect your chances for a job?

I just applied to work at business depot in Canada. Everything was going great until I found out they perform backround checks on everyone they hire. Nothing about that scares me except the credit check they run. I have no credit and I may or may not be a co-signer on a loan for someone that has declared brankruptcy. It is a long story so bare with me.

Several years ago I wanted a computer. We saw a ad for one of thoses buck a day companies and I applied for one. Being 18 and with no credit I was turned down. My Mother then applied for the loan and was granted one. I was the one buying the computer and my mother was the one paying for it. I was listed as a second contact about the computer but I was under the impression that I was not on the hook for the loan. I signed some paperwork which I thought was to be listed as someone that they could talk to about the computer. I didn't send in my SIN number or any photo I.D which I belive is required for a loan like this. My Mother is two months away from being discharged but Citifinancial is still bugging her about payment dispite the fact she told them she declared bankruptcy and included them in that. The trustee has sent them the papers. They haven't sent me any papers or anything but I am worried that it might effect my credit score because we heard before they might of screwed up and put me down as a co-signer rather than just a contact about the computer, not the loan.

I have a few questions

1. How much could this of effected my credit score? Will it prevent me from getting a job?

2. If I am listed as a co-signer how do I get that fixed? I never meant to be a co-signer, only a contact. I did sign something that I was told was to list me as a contact. I never sent in any I.D or anything like that.

3. How can I get citi to leave my Mother alone and what are her rights? Can she sue to get them to stop? Its causing us a lot of stress and I want them to leave her alone.

Thank you

If you really aren't on the loan, and you haven't recieved any notices from anyone, it shouldn't affect your credit score at all.

Regarding credit scores and employment, technically, employers are not supposed to discrimate based on credit, but their are loopholes (i.e. if its material to a job requirement, for example, if the job you are applying for requires handling of money or sensitive info, then they will probably require a credit report and can discriminate accordingly).

Is your mother represented by an attorney? If so, the attorney should handle this either by a Motion to Avoid the Lien, or do a reaffirmation agreement. If she doesn't do anything, then CitiFin have a right to repossess the computer.

I am a victim of getting turned down for a job because of my credit. I had interviewed and been offered the job the next day. Three days later they called and said they couldn't hire me because of my credit. This was a security alarm installation company that deals with home and commercial accounts including banks, and that was their reasoning. So, it could happen!

A lot of finanical services type jobs require applicants/employees to have good credit.

Here's a great idea: check your credit report. See if you are listed as someone on that loan.

If it's not on there, then you're in the clear!
