    Legal Helpers Issue

When I was originally thinking of filing, I called Legal Helpers. After talking with them on the phone, I made an inperson apt.

When I saw their atty, she told me that I would have to file a Chpt 13 and not a 7. She was totally wrong. She had miscalculated my income to determine if I was under the threshold. I had a lot of time off work due to illness and that pushed me under the median. But she didn't do the numbers right.

She was also wrong on a couple of other points. She told me I couldn't use the cards at all for three months before filing, which is totally wrong.

I went to a local atty and he said I was way (over $1500) under the median. I had been using my cards to pay necessities so I wasn't behind in any payments. The local atty said that wasn't a problem and that the worst that would happen was that one or two specific charges might be challenged. If the challenges would be upheld, I would have to pay them but I would still be way ahead.

He did all the paperwork very quickly. I had my 341 hearing today. There were no objections from creditors. The atty spoke with the trustee last Friday to make sure she was aware that there were health reasons why my income has been so much lower recently. No one in the trustee's office had any questions or problems.

The atty says I'm home free.

He also charged me $400 less than Legal Helpers.

I don't mean this as a blanket condemnation of LH. I know others have been pleased with them. This is mostly to caution people to check with more than one atty.

I also have "issues" with legalhelpers, but I believe mine are directly related to the relationship between my attorney and the legalhelpers franchise.

      See this thread: http://bkforum.com/showthread.php?t=14062

I have been generally pleased with my attorney and his staff at this point.

However, those idiots in Chicago at that 1(800) number are another thing entirely.

I have told him that I think they do him a great disservice and he should dump them and find another associate or strike out on his own.

He would do much better, IMHO.

I'm glad that things did work out for you in the end.

Think positively, things are going to work out well for you.

      Best Regards,

      CPO

I'm with CPO - I'm VERY happy with my legal helpers attorney, it's the dumb arses in Chicago who need to be booted! Although, when I called the other day, the girl in Chicago was "talking" via the computer to the paralegal in Detroit and I was able to get direct answers from my attorney's office. I liked that VERY much!

My experience with them has turned out to be a negative one. The particular attorney I have is disinterested, rude, impossible to contact and bordering on complete incompetency with error after error after error. Those errors causing delay after delay not to mention objections!

Good that you followed your gut out of legalhelpers hocus, but also glad for others here that they actually worked out for.

To all just beginning, take time to read around this board and see how important it is to take pick the right attorney!

Agree with Hopeless. LH deals I think mainly in high volume BK. If you hire them be prepared for long hold times, and long filing wait. I decided not to go with them...although initially they were quite helpful, and gave me some great advice. I didn't find them to be a bad oufit for the most part...I think they are just spread too thin, however I decided to go with a more local attorney.

If you are finding yourself stressed completely out by this as I was then the best advice I can give you before you pay any money to an attorney is to talk to several. I wish I had. Compare the fee structure, your attorneys ego, and how closely they will listen to you.

            Wish you well,
            Desperation
