I moved your thread since debt consolidation really has little to do with Chapter 7 BK.
As for honest companies, they are few and far between.
The larger question is whether you are truly a candidate for debt consolidation. DC (or debt settlement) is really only for those with relatively high incomes, who cannot (or should not) file BK and have significant "cash" assets lying around to make lump sum payments to their creditors.
It's not so much that DC companies are dishonest, its just that they accept people into their programs that really don't belong (after all, the DC companies need customers to stay in business). Almost without exception, the people on this forum who have used DC companies ended up filing BK anyway and simply wasted time and money trying to go the DC route.

This is correct. Some DC companies will enroll you even if you are not qualified for their program. Do research before trusting any company.
Also, you have the option of debt settlement as well. Debt settlement is not for everyone. It is meant for people who are experiencing a financial hardship such as divorce, unemployment, medical debt, etc.
I hope this helps
