am I going to have a problem renting over the next 5 years??? I know I cant buy a home, but I'm worried about even renting!
CG, if you do a search of the forums using "rent", you'll find many folks who have had your concern. Right after filing, most filers seem to have the best luck steering clear of the big complexes and looking for private owners who rent a few properties. They tend to be more understanding of the ups and downs of life and pay less attention to your credit report.
There are many success stories here in the forum of members who found wonderful rentals with understanding landlords. Chances are the same will happen for you!
I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice nor a statement of the law - only a lawyer can provide those.

Darn it! I want to rent at this property near my sister. It's beautiful and I can afford it once I file.
Do I have to keep my rent still around what it says on my petition?

Your Ch 13 plan is set up to give all your disposable income to your trustee every month. There won't be very much wiggle room at all (if any) in your budget every month.
If you increase your rent, then you will have to find the extra money elsewhere in your budget every month. Buy less food, less clothes, less car maintenance....less of something....to make up the difference. It's a risky way to start a new Ch 13.
My suggestion...live on your plan for at least six months to see what kind of play you have in your budget. If it looks like you consistently have enough extra left over at the end of the month to cover the rent increase, then go for it.
