How does collections and bankruptcy affect "authorized users" on credit card accounts? The authorized user never signed any paper work or applications. I'm planning on filing bankruptcy, and at present I'm not paying any credit cards. I've since realized that years ago I had placed my son on a credit card as an "authorized user", it was a gas card. How, if any, will my situation affect him and his credit?

As far as accounts listed in your bankruptcy go, you filed for bankruptcy, not your son. The only time other persons are affected on their credit reports when you file bk if is the other person is a co-signer for any account. An authorized user has no responsibility for paying the debt at all.Originally posted by nojusticehere View PostHow does collections and bankruptcy affect "authorized users" on credit card accounts? Have your son check his credit report. If any of his accounts where he is an authorized user only show anything related to bankruptcy, have him challenge those and get them corrected immediately.
However, if your son defaults on debts he legitimately owes as the primary owner or a co-signer, then those will show up on his credit reports and the credit agencies are correct to show late payments or charge-offs if those are accurate.I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice nor a statement of the law - only a lawyer can provide those.

My son noticed that they are reporting on his credit report as an "authorized user", and because I'm filing Ch 13 soon, I haven't been paying the bill and it's showing up. It's also affected his score. So, what I may do, is become current on the bill, request they remove his name as an authorized user, then once they stop reporting have it removed. Does this sound right/acceptable? I dont' want his credit messed up because of me. I wasn't aware that "authorized users" were reported. I know he's not responsible, but I "googled" it and it's legal for CC companies to report negative info on "authorized users" credit report. How lame is that??????? So I need to take care of this immediately. Anyone have any more thoughts?

then if i were you, because i was an authorized user on my aunt's accounts. I had her remove me as authorized user! I then filed a dispute with each reporting agency saying i was removed as authorized user and they did remove me from all of the credit reports for that account.
What you should do is you need to contact the gas card company and have him removed as authorized user. They send something in the mail in writing that they removed him. then he needs to contact all the credit bureas and tell them he was removed as authorized user and that he wants this removed from his credit report.
the only reason why i'm telling you this is because I went through it. This can all be straightened out in less than a month.

Wow, this was sooooo easy. I didn't call, but logged into my shell account. Sent them a message requesting they remove my son from the account as an authorized user. Within 2 days I received a message back stating that they had removed him as an authorized user, but I should make sure and retrieve any cards in his possession since I'm still responsible for the account. I made a copy of their reply. Wow, seems almost to easy
. But, if what they say is true, he's off and they shouldn't be reporting any further info etc. Now, should I have him go on his CR and dispute the entry as "not his" so they remove any late payment history off of his CR? Thanks again for all your help.
