How much was your attorney?

If you are going to file Ch 7 in the KC area, look to pay $1000-2000 depending on how complex your case is. If you are going to file Ch 13, then look to pay $1500-2500. Of course, there are good lawyers who charge more, and bad lawyers who charge less.Originally posted by Ms.Santos View PostSince I am truly *bankrupt,* I have no money to pay an attorney. What many folks do is stop paying their non-secured credit cards and loans, then save that money to pay their bankruptcy lawyer. That's what we did. Also bankruptcy attorneys are used to working with people who have no money, so some will help you with payment plans or other strategies to help you pay their fees.
There is also a strong Legal Aid presence in KC - http://www.lawmo.org/offices.htm . They can help you file for little to no cost depending on your circumstances, although they may not be bankruptcy specialists.
Others will decide that they will educate themselves thoroughly about bankruptcy and try to file without a lawyer (pro se). If you have a very straightforward, uncomplicated, no-asset case, this can be done as well.
Do you live on the Kansas or Missouri side of Kansas City? I'm in the KC area too - can give you some lawyer names by private message to contact depending on which chapter you are hoping to file.I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice nor a statement of the law - only a lawyer can provide those.

Mine was supposed to be 1500, included filing fee, but I have a legal plan through work, so I only paid for the filing fee, and the plan paid for the lawyer fee. It's like legal insurance. I only pay my legal plan 15 a month, so I figure it'll be a long time before they break even on me.

I found prices ranging from $900 to $4000 for a simple Ch. 7 (no assets), no secured loans.
The $4k one was simply gouging people due to her great qualifications, and if I had a really complicated case or a business case I might want to use her.
And the cheap one was relatively young and only had a couple years experience and did divorces AND bankruptcies.
I went with the "middle way" and chose one who is charging $1750 for my wife and I's Ch. 7, plus filing fee plus credit counseling fee as required. And he does only bankruptcies and has years of experience.<<I am NOT an attorney, my comments are anecdotal only. Contact an attorney for advice>>

$1,450 including court/filing fees.
In NJ no less, so its a good deal.

Extra work from lawyer, reaffirm and extra paralegals fees are by the hour but we did not need any so far..(KNock on wood) THATS where it gets expensive.

When we were looking over a year ago,.......... The going rate for a simple, straight forward, no asset, Ch 7 was $700-$1K for the attny's fee.
Our case was a bit more complex. We paid $2K attny's fee plus filing and BK Certs fees.Filed Ch 7 - 09/06

I am not an attorney. My comments are based on personal experience and research. Always consult an attorney in your area to address concerns related to your particular situation.

Ours is costing us $1800 total for everything. Checked several attorney's and the cost was the same for Chap 7 with each of them.
My be others cheaper where I live, but we went with an attorney some people we know used for their BK.
