    Discharged!!!

We filed May 29th and were discharged yesterday. For those who have gambling debt, there is hope. We racked up $145K of debt in less than a year and a half (gambling, finishing our basement, paying bills, etc) but I would say half was gambling. We never had one creditor object, no additional requested info from trustee, etc. It went really smoothly. So there is hope for those who don't have years between them and their debt, and large amts of gambling debt.

Two things I never want to see again in my life:

    A casino
    A payday loan.

    Fresh start, here I come!

HAPPY DANCE, HAPPY DANCE, HAPPY DANCE

I love it when a "new beginning" starts for someone...... just like a new day and the beginning of the rest of your life.....

Hope you use your "fresh start" wisely, and with caution when it comes to taking on new debt in your lives.

Be sure gambling is a thing of your past.............

      Good Luck,
      Minny

Gambling is not what caused my debt problems (in fact, I usually end up winning when I gamble) but even if it was in your case, I don't think that means you have to never enter a casino again. A casino can be a lot of fun even if you lose, but just make sure you have a set amount of money that you can afford to lose. Even if it's just $20 playing a penny machine (tables are my games though). The most important thing is to not chase after your losses. When I go into a casino I just automatically assume the money I brought to play is already lost, that way I enjoy it better.

So really it isn't so much about the casino, it has more to do with one's self control. The same thing can happen to people who rack up debt buying clothes, expensive vacations, or fancy cars. It's all the same. Does that mean they aren't going to buy another pair of shoes, another car, or never travel again? No way! It just means they are going to have to design a better plan to live within their means. I will receive my discharge next week, and actually plan to celebrate my new start by having a drink with some friends at a local casino.

That is just my opinion though! If it helps you to drop the casino altogether, great! You obviously enjoyed gambling at one point though, so I think if you just worked on self control you could enjoy it just the same. I think I would definitely wait a long while until you have a solid financial plan though. For me, I have to work on my self control from buying expensive cars and taking expensive trips. I'm still going to buy cars and take trips, but only when I can actually afford to buy them, not when I know it's beyond my budget. So in other words, it will be like me doing the minimum bet vs. the maximum bet.

            interesting Bryan

I have to disagree with you - when I am in a casino, there is no such thing as self-control. I know this about myself so I cannot just go and have a "set" amount. I hate how I feel when I lose also, and I feel disgusted with myself. I choose to just stop gambling altogether, and my husband and I have decided to have ourselves banned from the casino we live by. We already had our fun, we gambled 65K away. Now I wish I would have purchased furniture or paid off both our cars with the credit cards and then had them discharged. Oh well...........

Bryan, you don't work for Gambling Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous, do you? I bet on the real estate market and lost badly, which is why I am here in this forum. Never again. Maybe a small vacation home or condo some day if I have the money, but no more speculating, ever again. Only controllable items in my life now................

                A drinking addiction senario:

Self-Control :: Have 1 drink, stop, sleep over.. no driving home ..

Addiction/Habitual :: Have excessive drinks, .. then continue driving home... no matter what.. j/k

lol, not at all. A lot of things changed for me after I filed, and I started to see things a lot different. I also realized that I don't have to stop buying the things I want, but I have to set certain goals and priorities first. Before I filed, if I wanted something I would just go out and buy it and worry about paying it later. It wasn't the credit that got me in trouble, it was my own self-control. I guess it could be different for everyone though. Some people quit what they did altogether (gambling for example) and others just learn to do it in moderation when they can afford it.

I have seen my older brother lose thousands in one night (many times) and wonder how he was going to pay his bills the next week. It was really bad. Now he is to the point where he can go to the casino once in a while, have a drink, and play $20 and leave saying he enjoyed himself. Living next to a casino doesn't help, but he sure has come a long way. Him and I really enjoy the casino atmosphere, so we just learned to set limits.

My g/f is a casino nut too, but she will give me her debit card after her BK and we will take in what I give her to spend. She loves it too much to give up. She said after she is done, she likes to just walk around and watch people for an hour. She said if she could play with free money, that it would be just as fun. She doesn't play to win EVER. If she does, it's just a bonus but she loves it so she'll never stop.
