how to find a good lawyer

How do you find a good lawyer?

    #2
If you considering BK try and find an attorney who specializes in BKs. We picked our attorney because he had already done some legal work for us and we knew he did quite a few BKs and his office is in our town. I have heard people have picked lawyers who are one size fits all types and have regretted it. It is not that the lawyer can't file for you; it is simply not his specialty so I would think the more he/she knows about the BK laws; the better. And for the record just because one charges a higher fee doesnt make him/her a better attorney. It isnt the kind of question you can ask around to find an answer to. Obviously we are all trying to keep our decision as confidential as possible so the fewer people that know - the better. What part of the country do you live in? Maybe someone on the forum is from your state and can recommend a lawyer.

Generally a referral from someone you know is the best option. When it comes to BK lawyers, there are generally two types, (1) the high volumn, (2) and the not high volumn.

High volumn practices tend to be cheaper, but you generally won't get personal attention, and most, if not all, the work on your case is performed by a paralegal. However, they are experienced since BK is all they do. There is nothing wrong with this per se and it suits most ordinary BK cases. But it can be difficult to get your questions answered.

The not so high volumn practice is a mixed bag. Prices can be competitive with the high volumn practices; they do tend to give a little more personal attention to your case, but you run the risk of getting an attorney who may not know all the ins and outs of BK. However, if you get someone good, its well worth it, especially in a more complex case.

Ultimately, you want to meet with several attorney's. I personally think you would probably want to go with the attorney that does NOT sugar coat the process and will tell you the wrost case senario.
