unifund suit

i just checked the local govt clerk of court, and i am being sued in small claims court by unifund, who apparantly represent an old debt that i have no idea who is the original creditor. i am sure this debt is over 4 years old and should be subject to statute of limitations. but i am wondering why a lawyer would travel here from coral gables florida to clay county to try and get judgment,i was unaware that lawyers could sue in small claims courts. i have been hanging up on credit collectors after telling them that any old debt i have is past statute of limitations. any suggestions on how to handle this. i assume i can ask the judge for a detail of every dime being asked of me by the way the amount is for 2500, can i ask for verification of last activity on this account, thus verifying the 4 year sol.
