after the 341 hearing on a chapter 7, are you required to appear before the court for the discharge or for anything else?

Or do you just basically wait for the paperwork to me mailed?

Generally no, there is nothing more for you to do after the 341, so yes, you just wait for your discharge.

If something else is required of you, you will get a notice from Bankruptcy court and/or Trustee.
