Hi all. I'm wondering if a debt validation letter must be sent within 30 days? I have a letter from a collection agency dated September 19, 2007 and I want to send a validation letter, but not sure if it's too late.
The letter says that "federal law gives you thirty days after you receive this letter to dispute the validity of this debt or any part of it. If you do not dispute it within that period, we will assume this debt is valid." But it also says "failure to dispute the validity of the debt under this section may not be construed by any court as an admission of liability by you."
I just don't want to waste my time (and money for certified mail) to send a validation letter if I'm going to get a response that they don't have to validate it because I waited too long.
Any advice is appreciated.
