AMEX and law firm

I got a call this evening from a law firm called Wagner and Hunt. They are calling on behalf of AMEX for a $2300 bill ($500) of which are the fees and interest in the last several months. They said I should call ASAP to set up a payment plan or see if they can help me by "offering me a different AMEX card". WHAT?!?!? I can't pay the one I have but you want to give me ANOTHER card? ! I didn't take the call - my husband did and he just gave them our new address and told them to send us everything in writing. It looks like I'll have to retain an attorney sooner rather than later...

Believe it or not the same thing happened to me, but it was with GEMB bank. I had a card that had been charged off and they offered to send me a new card with the old balance transferred onto it. Sneaky huh?
