    Means Test Question

    Hello everyone,

This is my first post so please bear with me.

I will be filing married-not jointly-seperate household. I rent my home ($1350 month) Have 2 vehicles (Mine and my daughters) Vehicle 1 is $305 per month and Vehicle 2 is paid for.

On line 20B, housing or utilities my state allowance is 789. Now my question is, on line 42a do I put in the $1350.00 per month I pay in rent?

Sorry if too long, trying to provide background info.

    Thanks

You are confused.... As you noted, line 20b is where you put the $789 that the IRS allows for rent. That is it.... you are done. Since you don't have any secured real estate you put a zero on line 42a...which is for <mortgage payments> and other secured loans..In other words, you can only claim a portion of your actual rental payment.

Understand that the IRS allows you certain expenses. What you <actually> pay is not all that relevant on the Means Test.

We have the same problem with rent. For our area the allowance for rent is 1843$, and rent here is way more than that for a 3 bedroom. I wonder where they are looking at when they come up with the area allowance.
