When to get a new credit card?

I recently filed and curious when it's cool to start looking for a card to rebuild my credit. I've heard that it's not okay to take on any new debt until discharge. But can someone start contacting banks before the discharge? Is it possible and legit to start working on this as long as I don't take on any debt until after the discharge? I'm not even sure if any banks will even talk about it before discharge but curious anyway. I haven't found anything in writing that dictates the timeline of new cards. Any info is appreciated.

Well......first thing is you're right about no new debt until after discharge. As far as when you can start applying, I would wait until after your discharge and then make sure you get your credit reports to make sure everything is reported correctly (annual credit report is free and you can correct errors through this site). Anyways, do not bother calling your local banks, like National City, Fifth Third and those of the like, because the BK MUST BE off of your credit report before they'll consider giving you a CC. We have a Sticky thread under this section with regards to recommeded CC's and you can check that out and decide for yourself which CC would suit your needs. Be prepared though. Some of the CC's you may only qualify for will be the higher fee and higher interest rate CC's.
