back taxes real estate unpaid question

We have had a home up for sale for sometime now and we have had some financial hardships. we have to very small children 2 and 4 years old and my husband was layed off. We were unable to pay the back taxes. my question is a person came to our door this evening and wanted to know when we were planning to pay our taxes. We told them we have are place up for sale and are planning on paying them as soon as we sell our home. Come to find out he says he is the owner of the realestate back taxes certificate.....

I was so upset..... I cant believe they would come to our home.
Can they do this? can I make a complaint we live in Illinois and we have 2 1/2 years to pay them before they can start foreclosure. and we are doing are best to sell our home asap.

    any ideas?

I don't know the specifics of IL law, but generally speaking, property taxes have to be brought current in order to pass clear title in a sales transaction.

      great news today

I called my mortgage company regarding my taxes and they have payed them in full.......... I am so happy we have arrange a payment plan with them so I no longer have back taxes owed and will be able to get back on track...... We have enough money saved for 2007 taxes already so this has been just a great day for us...
I am so glad I found this board I really appreciate every ones input on questions. I have learned alot and I hope I can learn from all the mistakes I have done in the past and look to a better future for my family...
