Surrendering a car - do they give you a receipt?

When a car is repossessed, do you get a receipt saying that you no longer have it in your possession? I finally found someone who's willing to take a chance financing me for a $5000 car, but one of the conditions of the deal is that I show proof that I surrendered my current car.

I can't do any surrendering quite yet - the dealer doesn't have a car on his lot that fits the other criteria set forth by the finance company - but as soon as he finds the "right" car, I want the deal to go as smoothly as possible.

I feel silly asking this... it's not like we're talking about dropping off dry cleaning

In your best interest, definitely get a receipt even if the new lender does not require it. You should think in terms of documenting everything and having a paper trail to back up all transactions.
