Need quick help re: surrendering car

My attorney has been in court all day and I can't get a hold of him until Monday, so I'm hoping someone here can help me out.

I'm surrendering my car tomorrow morning. On the phone, the CU rep mentioned "paperwork" that has to be filled out while I'm there. I'm leery of signing or doing anything that might wreck my chances of having the balance I'll still owe them discharged. She told me to bring both sets of keys and the title, which I'll turn over to her. What else is usually done when one surrenders a car? Is it normal to complete paperwork? What should I watch out for?

    Any advice?

ETA: I haven't actually filed yet but will sign everything next week and will file by the end of the month (if that makes a difference).

Why didn't you wait until after you file to give up the car?

You have the title, yet they get the car?? Doesn't the title come when you have paid the car off.

In NY, the driver possesses the title but the bank listed as the lien holder.

I'm surrendering it because I now have a cheap car to drive and I don't want to continue paying $90/mo. insurance on the extra vehicle.

You've no obligation to cooperate with any paperwork. I'd just give 'em the keys and the title and walk out. Leave a note with your lawyers contact info.

I would turn it in, and don't sign anything.
          Congrats on a cheaper car.

Thanks, Cali! It's a real relief to have something affordable and reliable to drive. I cannot WAIT to get rid of my "white elephant"

Thanks for the responses, all. I thought that signing anything sounded like a bad idea... good to know I'm not the only one.
