Energy fears looming, new survivalists prepare

A few years ago, Kathleen Breault was just another suburban grandma, driving countless hours every week, stopping for lunch at McDonald's, buying clothes at the mall, watching TV in the evenings.

That was before Breault heard an author talk about the bleak future of the world's oil supply. Now, she's preparing for the world as we know it to disappear.

Breault cut her driving time in half. She switched to a diet of locally grown foods near her upstate New York home and lost 70 pounds. She sliced up her credit cards, banished her television and swore off plane travel. She began relying on a wood-burning stove.

"I was panic-stricken," the 50-year-old recalled, her voice shaking. "Devastated. Depressed. Afraid. Vulnerable. Weak. Alone. Just terrible."

Convinced the planet's oil supply is dwindling and the world's economies are heading for a crash, some people around the country are moving onto homesteads, learning to live off their land, conserving fuel and, in some cases, stocking up on guns they expect to use to defend themselves and their supplies from desperate crowds of people who didn't prepare.

The exact number of people taking such steps is impossible to determine, but anecdotal evidence suggests that the movement has been gaining momentum in the last few years.

These energy survivalists are not leading some sort of green revolution meant to save the planet. Many of them believe it is too late for that, seeing signs in soaring fuel and food prices and a faltering U.S. economy, and are largely focused on saving themselves.

Some are doing it quietly, giving few details of their preparations — afraid that revealing such information as the location of their supplies will endanger themselves and their loved ones. They envision a future in which the nation's cities will be filled with hungry, desperate refugees forced to go looking for food, shelter and water.

"There's going to be things that happen when people can't get things that they need for themselves and their families," said Lynn-Marie, who believes cities could see a rise in violence as early as 2012.

Lynn-Marie asked to be identified by her first name to protect her homestead in rural western Idaho. Many of these survivalists declined to speak to The Associated Press for similar reasons.

These survivalists believe in "peak oil," the idea that world oil production is set to hit a high point and then decline. Scientists who support idea say the amount of oil produced in the world each year has already or will soon begin a downward slide, even amid increased demand. But many scientists say such a scenario will be avoided as other sources of energy come in to fill the void.

On the PeakOil.com Web site, where upward of 800 people gathered on recent evenings, believers engage in a debate about what kind of world awaits.

Some members argue there will be no financial crash, but a slow slide into harder times. Some believe the federal government will respond to the loss of energy security with a clampdown on personal freedoms. Others simply don't trust that the government can maintain basic services in the face of an energy crisis.

The powers that be, they've determined, will be largely powerless to stop what is to come.

Determined to guard themselves from potentially harsh times ahead, Lynn-Marie and her husband have already planted an orchard of about 40 trees and built a greenhouse on their 7 1/2 acres. They have built their own irrigation system. They've begun to raise chickens and pigs, and they've learned to slaughter them.

The couple have gotten rid of their TV and instead have been reading dusty old books published in their grandparents' era, books that explain the simpler lifestyle they are trying to revive. Lynn-Marie has been teaching herself how to make soap. Her husband, concerned about one day being unable to get medications, has been training to become an herbalist.

By 2012, they expect to power their property with solar panels, and produce their own meat, milk and vegetables. When things start to fall apart, they expect their children and grandchildren will come back home and help them work the land. She envisions a day when the family may have to decide whether to turn needy people away from their door.

"People will be unprepared," she said. "And we can imagine marauding hordes."

So can Peter Laskowski. Living in a woodsy area outside of Montpelier, Vt., the 57-year-old retiree has become the local constable and a deputy sheriff for his county, as well as an emergency medical technician.

"I decided there was nothing like getting the training myself to deal with insurrections, if that's a possibility," said the former executive recruiter.

Laskowski is taking steps similar to environmentalists: conserving fuel, consuming less, studying global warming, and relying on local produce and craftsmen. Laskowski is powering his home with solar panels and is raising fish, geese, ducks and sheep. He has planted apple and pear trees and is growing lettuce, spinach and corn.

Whenever possible, he uses his bicycle to get into town.

"I remember the oil crisis in '73; I remember waiting in line for gas," Laskowski said. "If there is a disruption in the oil supply it will be very quickly elevated into a disaster."

Breault said she hopes to someday band together with her neighbors to form a self-sufficient community. Women will always be having babies, she notes, and she imagines her skills as a midwife will always be in demand.

For now, she is readying for the more immediate work ahead: There's a root cellar to dig, fruit trees and vegetable plots to plant. She has put a bicycle on layaway, and soon she'll be able to bike to visit her grandkids even if there is no oil at the pump.

Whatever the shape of things yet to come, she said, she's done what she can to prepare.

Goodness gracious. The economy and foreclosures and everything else is making so many people worried and sick.

What is going to happen? Is this all like Bill Hicks said, and we don't have anything to worry about?

    The late Bill Hicks:
The world is like a ride in an amusement park and when you choose to go on it you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and around and around and it has thrills and chills and it's very brightly coloured and it's very loud. And it's fun - for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question; is this real? Or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, and they say, "Hey, don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because... this is just a ride."

Our nation is in a crossroads, and our Constitution hangs by a thread. We live in a perilous time caused by those politicians we have elected, who rather than remembering that they are the servants of the people have sought to be Kings over us.

Who among the politicians today has the fortitude of George Washington. Washington who led a rag tag army through almost unsurmountable odds to defeat the greatest power in the world at the time, then came before the continental congress and surrendered his sword. When it was put forth that he should be King, he said "I did not overthrow the tyranny of King George III to be King George I."

Washington in his great wisdom spoke against political parties. Warned of their poisonous influence.

When finally elected President and having served two full terms Washington left the Presidency despite widespread policy. He is said to have said it was enough.

There are very few in Washington DC today that remain the legacy of the man to whom their city is named. They are caught up in power for powers sake. Glory for glory's sake, and have forgotten to look after the people.

As such we have a congress that moves by populist agendas and beholden to special interest despite such being contrary to the longterm benefit of the people. Who feel entitled to their positions and scoff at those they perceive beneath them. They only correspond in election years and mostly turn a deaf ear to the people the rest of the time.

The sheep go where the shepherd leads. Our shepherds have not done well. We have trusty petty men and women who looked good on camera or spoke well. We have to learn to look beyond what the media tells us, and look towards the truth ourselves. We have to look where it is sometimes difficult to see and make our minds not based on propaganda but upon truth.

If we do not awake shortly, we will awake to a land that is no longer free, no longer brave. We will follow the shepherds down to ruin.

Look at our two major presidential candidates. John McCain and Barrack Obama. Both missed over 60% of all votes in 2007 by either not being present during the vote or voting present. They had the worst record of anyone in the senate, yet these are the two men the major parties want to be president. If they cannot do their jobs as Senators, how can we expect them to do the job of President?

Most of our troubles have been caused by unnecessary Federal meddling in affairs that properly belong as rights of the States, and the failure of the States to cry out and demand they stop. Unconstitutional mandates and policies have bankrupted our nation. Sadly those who are the least well off, the poor and the elderly will suffer the most when the system collpases if something is not done soon. Entitlement programs do not help them, they only teach government dependence. It is like when you see a man near the river begging for food. If you give him a fish you feed him a day, if you take him with you and teach him to fish, then you feed him for life. Entitlement programs feed the people for the moment but make them ill prepared for the time when they shall be no more. We simply cannot afford them and the Federal Government has no constitutional right to offer them.

We must learn to be a self sufficient people again. We must learn to take care of ourselves and our families and our communities and rely upon those institution more than an uncaring central government. Our founding fathers would roll in their graves at the abomination that the Republicans and Democrats have brought us this past century.

Similar things occurred in the late 60's and during the 70's. Remember Charles Manson and his group setting up in the desert to survive Helter Skelter or the communes of the late 60's? Does anyone remember the gas shortage and rationing of the early 70's? It was so bad that in our state you were rationed on gas and/or allowed to get gas only on certain days depending if the last number on your license plate was odd or even or a certain letter of the alphabet.

There are too many people in the world and not enough resources to sustain us is the population keeps growing as it does and the earth's resources raped to the point where it cannot recover. Oil is a one time deal and cannot be regeneated or replaced in the earth's core. There is only so much and it will run out. Survivalists may be on point this time but all need to know that in less than two billion years, the earth will be burned out by a slowly enlarging sun that will turn into a red giant before dying. It will expand out to the orbit of Venus in size totally burning out the earth. If man survives to that time, he will totally have to leave the planet anyway and get out of the galaxy, which is also due to collide with the Galaxy Andrameda (sp?) possibly prior th that time. Man has a lot to think about in order to survive...
