Credit Card Stop Paying Timeline

I'm trying to get a feel for how many payments can be missed before the company either sells account to a collection agency or it gets charged off and it shows charged off on my credit report.

6 months. By law it takes 180 days for them to sell an account you are not paying to an outside agency.

If a company does in fact give up and sell your debt to someone else, is that when the "charge off" hits your credit? Will a BK erase or overwrite the charge off or do they both stay with your credit?
