    CapitalOne Requesting SSN Verification

I applied to capital one for a small credit card...now we had included a couple in our bk from capitalone so figured they would deny me....but I received a letter stating that I needed to mail in a copy of drivers license or bank statement to verify my social security number. Has this happened to anyone else? Just curious, wanting to build up my credit so that I can refinance my 18% Auto loan later on.

I'd call the phone number on the letter and confirm that it is they who really wanted that info. I'm real reluctant to give out that stuff over the mail (been a fraud victim before over a mortgage check that never arrived at the mortgage company, and thousands of dollars in counterfeit checks later).

    JMHO.

How did you apply, Online or Paper? If paper application then it is possible that whoever looked at your application cannot read your handwriting. If online then it could be some scam job trying to steal your identity.

This seems to be something on the increase and is also being done by Credit Reporting Agencies if you write in to obtain your credit reports. They will contact you to send in a copy of your driver's license, copy of utility bill showing address and your SS#. What you need to watch here is how you applied for these cards as Magyar stated. If you applied online, do not send that stuff in until you contact someone at the bank requesting that information and do not use the phone number on the paper you received. Call the bank/lender number for their customer service dept. (obtain online from their main website). There are so many scams out there and Lord knows who works for these credit places as they can easily grab and sell information to ID thieves or open accounts themselves. Be careful.
