11 USC 541(a)(5) discusses inheritence and it provides that property obtained by the debtor by bequest, devise or inheritance becomes property of the bankruptcy estate if the debtor acquired the right to the property within 180 days of "filing the petition".

I would guess that when it comes to inheritence, the date of death is the applicable date because that is when you become entitled to the property.
