collectors can use myspace as a skip tracing tool, so whenever signing up for anything online like that, if you dont want people to find you, dont use your real name. Here's a trick for you, google your name and see what comes up.Originally posted by Reddrocket07 View PostI kid you not, a company I got a private loan from for school actually sent me a message through Myspace! Reddrocket07 - that goes to show you first hand how easily trackable you are on the internet and how accessable you are, who you are friends with, now, your job information, your interests and where you reside. If you actually have to have a MySpace account, delete your current one and reopen one with less identifying information. I understand and know how popular MySpace and FaceBook are but listing certain information can get you in trouble. Be careful. Besides creditors, there are kooks and stalkers out there.Originally posted by Reddrocket07 View PostI kid you not, a company I got a private loan from for school actually sent me a message through Myspace! Yea, I used the same email address with the student loan company as I did with myspace. I havent decided whether to delete it or not. I just need to be more careful about what information I give out. I googled my name and the only thing that came up was a 2 year old wedding announcement and meeting minutes from an old employer. The only thing I fear are creditors contacting my employer, making me look bad and potentially costing me my job.01/17/2009 Filed

Have you ever tried googling your email address? Or any ID you use on any Forum or other postings? It's amazing what comes up...that is how they located you on MySpace, probably via the email address link.Originally posted by Reddrocket07 View PostYea, I used the same email address with the student loan company as I did with myspace. Myspace is stupid, but I have one also. My friends and family all have them so I figured why not and have had one up for a long time. The good thing is your can set your privacy settings to block anyone not your friend from seeing your page. As far as messages, at least you can block them from contacting you again can't you?
I got a debt collector calling my Cell Phone now, its started today. I never give it out and its never was on any of my applications. How they found it I don't know. But I'm doing my best just to ride this all out until I can file!Filed 10/20/08

most of the credit card companies i owe i had for years....like way back when i was still living with my parents, so i bought one of those cheap pre-paid cell phones, and recorded my full name on there, and i told my mom whenever they call give them that number, and not to call her anymore. i dont think any of them know where i presently work, and if the calls start coming in, im just going to have to tell them never to call my work again. i have like 5 new voicemails, i have my attorney retained and everything, but theres still some creditors i didnt get around to calling back yet...retained lawyer june 08, filed may 09....341 on 6/26/09- went smooth! List Cell on Do Not Call Registry
Go to donotcall.org (National Do Not Call Registry). You can list your cell phones. I never give out my cell phone number and have started getting "telemarketer" calls on my cell phone. I too never give out my cell phone except to friends, family and coworkers. How telemarketers got it , I have no idea unless wireless carriers are now selling cell phone number lists. While it is too late for you with your instance as to your creditor, if they call again tell them this is a registered number and you will report infractions if they continue to call. Read the information on the site. Can help anyone to protect their home and cell phone numbers from callers.Originally posted by Mark80 View PostMyspace is stupid, but I have one also. How they got your cell phone number...several ways; they obtained it via a search somehow on the internet or someone they talked to gave it to them. You can also block calls on your cell phone._________________________________________

I have heard--I don't know how true it is--that there are computers set up as 'auto-dialers'. That is, they are programmed with a range of possible telephone numbers, and they just go through the list number by number, by the next incremental digit.Originally posted by Flamingo View PostGo to donotcall.org (National Do Not Call Registry). Flamingo, that's donotcall.gov, not .org. It's a government site, regulated by the Federal Trade Commission.Originally posted by Flamingo View PostGo to donotcall.org (National Do Not Call Registry).
Here's a pertinent excerpt from their FAQ:
Q: My number is on the National Do Not Call Registry. After I bought something from a company, a telemarketer representing that organization called me. Is this a violation?
A: No. By purchasing something from the company, you established a business relationship with the company. As a result, even if you put your number on the National Do Not Call Registry, that company may call you for up to 18 months after your last purchase or delivery from it, or your last payment to it, unless you ask the company not to call again. In that case, the company must honor your request not to call. If they subsequently call you again, they may be subject to a fine of up to $11,000.
An established business relationship with a company also will be created if you make an inquiry to the company, or submit an application to it. This kind of established business relationship exists for three months after the inquiry or application. During this time, the company can call you.
If you make a specific request to that company not to call you, however, then the company may not call you, even if you have an established business relationship with that company.Filed chapter 7: June 9, 2008
