    chapter 7 bankruptcy question

How long does it usually take to file chapter 7 bankruptcy after you consult with attorney and get all paperwork ready? I was hoping i will beat the deadline of October 17 when the new bankruptcy law will go into effect.

Depends on the attorney, but if your well organized, it shouldn't take more than 2-3 weeks to prepare your case. And some of the higher volumn offices can turn around a petition in a couple days.

Here is a brief synopsis of my timeline so far in Wisconsin, and I'm working with a Bankruptcy firm.

Realized I might have to file bankruptcy: July 22
      Initial Consultation: July 28
      "Paper work session:" August 5th
      Petition signing: August 15th
Filing date according to attorney: August 16
Letters to creditors (again according to attorney): week of 22

So all that took around a month. I was really organized - prepared a binder with all the information. Get your consultation NOW. Let the lawyer know you want to file ASAP - prior to the Oct 17th deadline. Remember - it only needs to be FILED (which roughly took about 3 weeks for me).
