    Job Searching after Chapter 7

Can you provide any feedback of your job search since filing bankruptcy?

Did you get a new job even though the company did an extensive credit/background check? Have you felt that bankruptcy lessoned your chances for employment?

I filed bankruptcy 3 years ago because of medical bills after an emergency surgery that was billed out of network, and I have now been laid off.

I work in the financial industry, so today I am feeling pretty down about job prospects considering there are so many people unemployed. In today's market where foreclosure and bankruptcy filings are reeling, will I still be "black listed"?

Thanks for any encouragement and insight you can provide!

I also would be interested in knowing what the effects of a BK have on job prospects, particularly if you working as an accountant.

I, too, was laid off, and haven't found any work yet. My BK was done back in July, laid off in August, and still not employed.
Not sure if it's because of the BK or the job market. But I suspect it could be the market, because employers generally don't do background check before the 1st or 2nd interview.

This whole thing scares me, and I am coming to terms that my career may be over because of it. So I am thinking of other things I can do that a BK would not have any effect on (IT, graphic designers, etc.)

It can affect your ability to get jobs in certain fields. However it is still possible to get them. The best thing is that if they mention they are going to do a background check, make sure to just be open and honest about it. Mention that there was a bankruptcy, and why the bankruptcy occured...after all when they pull your credit report they'll see it. Hearing first from you and why might greatly impact your chances. Not all companies pull credit reports, however it is becoming more common.
