    Looking through my credit report...

I had noticed a severe slump in phone activity in the past few weeks and decided to check the ol' credit report and see who had what and noticed something that spawned a question.

A lot of my accounts say things like:

"Account charged off. $9,552 written off. $9,552 past due as of Oct 2006."

What exactly does "written off" mean? Does that mean they've effectively called it a loss and moved on to bigger and better things or what? I think only two maybe three of the accounts just say charged off and there is a corresponding CA on the credit report, the rest just have this "written off" on it and then it ends, no CA...nada.

They charge off or sell the debt to another debtor for so much on the dollar. Most likely the ones you've not heard from are in the system of being sold, and thus it may take a month or so for you to start hearing from someone anew about it.

Agree. The original lender has stopped trying to collect and the lull you're experiencing is the transition period while debt is changing hands. The silence probably won't last long...and expect a corresponding influx in your mailbox.
      Filed BK (Ch. 7) 6/2/08
      Discharged!! 9/24/08
      Closed..the end! 10/1/08

I'm on lull #3 now I think, I stopped paying on most accounts in late 2006. I kinda enjoy the vacation, I guess I'll get my C&D letters ready for the next wave.

Once you pay the new collector does your credit report still state "charge off"?

Are you going to file BK? If so why would you pay any money to any CA? Save your bucks your going to need it. Paying your cards, cc bill, ca's is just throwing your money down the flusher....Keep reading the posts on this forum, you'll learn a ton of info from these kind folks
