So much for having the strongest economy in the nation...

...I was laid off today. I have until November 14th... I'm a contractor and we're always the first to go, but I've been so busy lately that I didn't think that it was going to happen to any of us... This office is always so busy but they are letting 10 of the 20 of us go. I feel like crying but I have more dignity than that to cry at work and by the time I get to my car, I know that I won't be able to FORCE the tears to come. That's just how I am. My dual income household had already been slashed to solely me and whatever unemployment will pay DF... My company is going to try to find another place for me before the Nov 14th end date, in the meantime, I will search search search and pretend that my world is not caving in on me...
Disclaimer: Young, NOT Dumb.(._.) The plan: $480 monthly for 60 months at 100%. 07/12/08
    Motion to Discharge: FILED!! 08/07/13
    60 down/0 to go \m/(*.*)\m/ 100% complete!

Oh, NIDII, I'm so sorry! I'm a contractor, too, and since Microsoft pulled the plug on the project I'm working on (six DAYS before I filed BK), I've been employed on a month-to-month basis, praying every month that the library director will manage to convince yet another department to finance my work for a short-term project. DH already has a full-time job building our house with the scraps and bits my job can buy us, and he feeds us by teaching music lessons. It's a pretty tenuous existence, and I have imagined being where you are right this minute so many times.

But you know, I'm still here, five months later, mostly because they have managed to "find another place for me", even once the funding dries up. I really hope the same happens for you!

Hang in there, NIDII. You're strong and smart, and you will get through this!

I spent 6 months working on a project. I got everything working on a Friday. At 4:00 PM I was told I was terminated. My supervisor escorted me to my desk. He carried the box. I was told to put my things in the box which I did and then was told to leave. Nice place.

Well I had an email in my work inbox this morning from the manager of operations at my engineering firm (really he's the owner) asking me to send in my updated resume to put in front of clients. I hope this means that he's really looking out for me.

After 35 years working for at the time a big company NCR, they canned the whole help center. Everyone but me was in tears, running around making applications for other departments. I noted that those hired where not the good or hard workers but the "good ole boys". I went into the center's manager and demanded that every person should be interviewed and that I noted friends were being hired who were not the best choices and the others never got a chance. Nothing to lose, I threatened I would have charges of discrimination filed if he did not do so.

That changed, and everyone was interview. When it was my turn, I told them my qualifications, I had on record the amount of work I did referencing the second highest, it was 100% more and that I would not apply but only wished to voice my opinion.

The last day of 30 I was called into a department head office, offered a big promotion and money raise. I turned it down and told him this company has changed and ethics are worth more to me and his job.

I found out I could actually do more than be chattel for a corporation, and learned to teach computer hardware/software (what I was raised in) and recovered far better up to my complications with a law suit and health problems and then bk. At this time, I have my pride, and I know every job change always betters you. It is true. 'Hub

                Good for you HUB.

                NIDI,

I am also a contractor on a longterm contract. I feel for you and have been looking at my enviroment thinking I should move to work for the government. I figured any jobs open in the Gvt during this time is likely a needed job. Especially in Michigan. Thanks for sharing and thanks for the reminder.

I think that in my case Kinder Morgan is really the enemy. I LOVE the company that I work for, the owner called each of us individually and let us know, and got us two more weeks here, and is trying to find another position for us. So far out of all the firms that I have worked for this one has treated me the best and I really hope that they are able to find somewhere to place me within the company.

Sadly, I work in the Oil/Gas feild... Lower demand (which is causing all these "nice" low gas prices) is causing less production, which means less construction, which means less design/drafting/engineering jobs for the likes of me and mine in the engineering office here. But, hey, an hour before I got the call yesterday I filled up on gas for 1.99 a gallon...................... doesn't really make up for it though.

NIDII, it really does sound as if they're trying to look out for you, and I have a feeling you're going to land on your feet.

In my case, it's actually the university library I'm working AT rather than the company I'm working FOR which is looking out for me. They've got a great long-term temp job tailor-made to my skills just sitting there waiting for the money to run out of my current project. And the library director is hunting for funding to add me to her staff on a permanent basis. I'm SO grateful to her. Higher education - maybe especially in the Ivy League - is suffering right along with every other industry, but fortunately this is a rare/manuscript library which still has lots of private funding. So far.

In any case, it doesn't matter who it is, it's just wonderful to feel someone values your skill and your work enough to pull the strings they can reach.

                          Hang in there!
