    credit card after bankruptcy

    #2
Do a search on this forum - there are "tons" of postings as to credit cards with zero balances surviving BK. It is 98% safe to say that your card will eventually be closed out by the creditor once the creditor gets wind of your filing. It could be soon, it could be several months down the road and folks have posted on here having cards cancelled due to a former BK where the cards survived years after filing. You can use the card but to be safe only make small purchases that you can pay off immediately because if they cancel the card, you will be responsible for the entire balance due that is on there so be proactive and careful.

i thought maybe i'd get into trouble if i used it after discharge because i never told the O.Reciever about it.
I dont particuly want to use it, and im guessing if i request a new card (as i dont have the old one, i shredded it) they will twig and then close account??

again im not to sure on what to do after bankruptcy.
someone said about getting a credit report off of expirian and updating my recoreds, would this help in the future to get credit? (Applying for c/c)

If the card was not listed in your bankruptcy since it had a zero balance and survives your filing, that card is yours to use. However, as my original posting indicated, it's chances of survival are pretty low. If it does survive, it's yours to use. We also had two cards survive our filing; one we still have the other was cancelled 6 years after our filing due to "BK on our records" even though we used it throughout those six years even getting credit limit increases during that time (twice). Figure that one out...

About 3 months after your discharge, obtain all three of your credit reports and clean them up. Then go slow as to obtaining any credit as you will be denied due to your BK filing moreso than getting approved - approvals may come with high interest rates or other large fees. You will have that Chapter 7 showing on your credit reports for 10 years from your filing date and it will affect you during that time whether or not you will be approved for any credit.

Go to annualcreditreport.com. They are free once a year. Cleaning up your credit reports takes care of any errors made by the creditors or any other misinformation on your reports. It's up to you whether or not you want to do anything with your credit reports after filing. Most people clean them up. Best of luck to you!

You can get credit after a BK. I have been approved for 2 car loans and 5 credit cards in less than a year after my BK.

                    Really!!?

How does that work out then?
                    Do you have savings?
personal question how much did you owe?

If ch7 stays on your file for 10 years how can you be approved with the loans and C/C in under the first year?

I discharged about 120K between CC's and car loan. I applied for an Orchard CC the day after discharge and was approved for $500 (I canceled the card since they charged an annual fee). 3 months later I applied for a Capital One for $3500. I applied for a WAMU a few months later and was approved for 7K.

I have 2 others also and I do NOT carry balances.

You're life does not end after BK.

                            WAMU = Washington Mutual

Not all places will give you credit after BK. But the cleaner your reports are, the better your chances.

You can obtain all three of your credit reports once a year for free from that website. You can either have them mailed to you or review them online - your choice; read the information/instructions on the website. I would highly suggest you wait until about 3 months after discharge to do so and then start cleaning up. If you do it now, you will not give the credit reporting agencies time to change their information when you are discharged and it will be a waste of time for you to dispute prior to discharge unless you suspect something bad is going on as to ID theft or fraudulent activity in your accounts.
