    Say what you want...

Say what you want about Rooms to Go Furniture, it don't bother me. I paid $4000.00 for a Sears Homelife Leather Sofa, Ottoman and Chair in 1995 (pre-debt/BK days). They are made in Corinth, Mississippi, high quality and i still have them. They are heavy wood. The leather was maintained per instructions but still started cracking after two years. They are in my living room and still look pretty.

But I gotta' tell ya'. Four years ago I got a Dining Room, Bakers Rack, matching table and four chairs. 12 chairs, two tables, one China closet and the rack total and the stuff has stood up to three teens VERY well, though I know it's not the highest quality. Last night I took my Check Card AFTER ALL THE BILLS WERE PAID and went to the RTG clearance center in Pompano. I got two untorn leather sofas and a nice den table for $944.00. I checked every inch of the Sofas, the only damage was light fading on one sofa in the front and two scuff marks (2" x 1" ea.) on the back of the other. The one retailed for 1297.00 and the other for 969.00. I went over them with a fine tooth come and they are not built as well as the Homelife but are pretty darn close. The leather however is MUCH thicker than the Homelife. They look great in my den (two trips) and i saved a bunch of money. The 600.00 Futon from Sams (those mattresses don't last) and the old used Sofa went bye-bye.

Say what you want about RTG, I've a house full of it, along with some Levitz, El Dorado, sears HL and Carls (the Cadillac of furniture) but for the money, that was a real scratch and dent sale!!!!!!!

Our newest furniture is from Office Max-a computer desk bought last year that we assembled. Everything else is old and/or came from someone else. About 3-4 years ago my inlaws got chairs, couch, etc. from RTG and we got their old stuff. MIL has great credit so she did a year w/ no finance charges. DH still jokes w/ her that he'll be happy to take those items off her hands when she tires of them. Of course, as she has no kids/pets at home any longer they'll likely last another 10 years+!

We'll have decent furniture-some day. Its not high priority now, as what we have will do. In time, when we're able to-we'll save up and get things bit by bit. I want things that are decent quality & value, so they'll last.

Reminds me of a friend who had a house with the top of the line stuff..Full custom to his specs and desires..Money was NO object..But as always, he fell on tough times..No he didn't get rid of it, he quit buying it, but then again, he didn't need to buy..His dining table will last another 50 years, the chairs also..Livingroom furniture? Maybe another 25..Yes, very durable..

Quality does cost, but it'll outlast cheap always...

The only drawback to Lay-z-boy furniture, is they use plastic on the handles and nuts and bolts on the attatchments..I'd prefer rivited rollers..

Here in South Florida Carl's is about the best. I've got alot of stuff from them. Most of my furniture was pre BK times so those accounts were paid off. I'm sticking in budget now. I do however agree with Gen, quality pays for itself in the long run. the problem is that the last stands of good woods (old) are hard to find and you can't cut mahogony in the Everglades anymore and that HARD Dade County Pine is all gone. Dade County Pine is so hard that termites DO NOT touch it. Our very first house in Miami was made of poured concrete and had a Dade County Pine Roof (under barrel tile) that lasted for 42 years by the time we sold it. No leaks, no joke. No concrete blocks, POURED concrete walls, what a house.

However, I'm almost two years since filing BK, no debt but the house and truck (truck almost paid off!) and will not ever incur any more debt. I own alotta' land now that i can cash in when i need to and i'm buying alot more of it. I'm getting ready to buy some more commercial property less than 300 feet off of I-40 at an exit out in AZ. It is zoned for almost any commercial use and an Indian Casino is openining up at the next exit down. I don't want to ever go through the BK nightmare again.

I'd like to join that club! Buy w/ cash for me too. (If I can't afford it NOW I don't need it NOW.)

              Robivi3,
              Regarding the funiture issue....
I'm 57 and bought a new livingroom suit 7 years ago (to go in my new home)..the first I had ever bought any livingroom furniture that was new. I bought a new bedroom suit when I was 30... ONLY FURNITURE I HAVE EVER BOUGHT... My furniture all my life had been hand me downs and yard sale finds.
My first furniture when I left home (17) was a studio couch-bed (old) and a metal kitchen table (remember those). My coffee table and end tables I made out of wooden spools that wire comes on. I put formica on the tops and vinyl pleated around the sides. (these tables lasted almost 30 years and then I gave them away). In fact, I really do miss them..... like a part of me is gone.
When I bought my livingroom suit - I bought solid wood (yes, more expensive), but will never buy any more....will last me thru my lifetime.
On some things if you buy cheap - you get cheap quality.... other stuff it really doesn't matter.
I have an older brother who has to buy "the best of everything (it's a wife issue). They remodel every 2 or 3 years and she buys all new furniture/drapes etc. Seems a waste to me, they may need that money in the future......
You were talking about property investments. Yes, when my "case" is finally settled completely I'm interested in buying the house next door and the one across the street as investment property. They will pretty much pay for theirselves after they are purchased. Could turn into a nice extra income after I retire (hopefully).

Just my thoughts for the day,
