    I thought I was doing a good thing ...

As I posted the other day my dad died on Tuesday. I thought I would pay for an obituary in a North Texas paper were my parents used to live. In the obit I stated that dad had been a member of a certain union, well this evening my mom gets a phone call from a man who asked for dad. She explained that he had died ( I know, not good) he told her that he was an insurance rep. for the union and she was entitled to a $2,500 benefit. Well, of course this peaked her interest and she agreed for him to come over on Sunday to sign papers.

We only found out about this when she called my sister to say that she was worried about her dogs not eating, oh and by the way this man is coming over tomorrow. Fortunately mom got the name of the company and his number. My sister googled it and there are some reports that it is a scam. My sister called him back and he said that it was an accidental death benefit (well, dad didn't die of an accident) she also requested that he not come. My sister and I will make the two hour trip there tomorrow just in case he does.

I had no idea that simply letting dad's friends from his hometown know that he had died would have caused such a problem. Other than having her change her phone number I'm not sure how to prevent this from happening again. I know that she is lonely and I'm afraid that she is a prime target for something like this.

It is so upsetting that people would prey on lonely grieving widows. I feel for you.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of scams out there they prey on the vulnerable. If you can get your mother to screen all her calls with voicemail, in a couple of weeks the scammers will have moved onto easier prey.
You can't take a picture of this. It's already gone. ~~Nate, Six Feet Under

If they've been involved in scams you could call local law enforcement to let them know he's active in the area.

Sorry for the additional heartache at least you and your sister found out before your mom did anything. Sides what insurance man works on a Sunday

Also publish the info on the scam at ripoffreport.com or other such sites. This makes it harder for them to scam others as easily.
