In the months leading up to fileing should I keep my Bank account balances low?
Can I keep just enough to cover bills and use cash for all other necessities?

Check to see what the exemption for cash is in your district, unless you carry large wads of cash around, you'll probably be okay, because if you have large want cash in your checking account you wouldn't be filing bankruptcy.

If you have the option, I would do what you are proposing yourself. Keep just enough to cover the bills, expenses. If you are under median, within exemptions, it really doesn't matter anyway, but if it makes you feel better, stay there. It will just decrease the (unlikely) possiblity of an argument arising that you have disposable income.
But the reality is that you don't have disposable income, do you? Otherwise we wouldn't be on the bankruptcy forum talking about this at 11:37 on a Monday night. :)
