    Work Vent

(I like my job, most days...)

    Preface:
I work in the accounting department of a property management company. This office handles 25 properties. We normally have 2 accounts payable people-including me-and 3 property accountants. 2 weeks ago, the other a/p person worked her last day due to some serious health problems. She won't be back...

The end of the month is my busiest, because even though the properties are supposed to send their bills in each week - they don't. They tend to wait til the end of the month. SO-for the past 2 weeks, I've been TRYING to do the work of 2 people, and the load of work is at its heaviest right now. One of the accountants is giving me grief because I don't have everything in for the month. (A/P closes for February about a week before the month ends.) Hello! I'm one person and all of the invoices aren't even HERE yet. Of course I'm not done!

    I totally sympathize Staci

I work in accounting too. The whole closing cycle really SUCKS doesn't it?? LOL

I've been doing it for 13 years at the same company and I'm SOOOO tired of month end!

We close on a Saturday each month. So once a month we have to work the Sunday after close to do all of Friday & Saturdays business before Monday morn, so we can commence the closing procedures Monday, Tues & Weds. Closing almost always ruins the late in the month holidays, like Christmas, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day too.

Luckily, 2005 was our 7 year adjustment (we run 4,4,5) and we made December a 6 week period to align the fiscal calendar more with the calendar calendar. So we didn't close til the Saturday AFTER Christmas, which was awesome, except, of course, for the fact that it was New Years ! LOLOL

Last spring the payroll clerk , whose position I cover when she's off, was on disability for a couple months and I had to do my job plus payroll for 400 + employees. I acually ended up on anti-anxiety meds for a brief time to avoid having my own little disability issue ~ stress leave !

Right now I've got an analyst at corporate who is driving me CRAZY after every close requesting clarification and additional backup for my journal entries. AAARRRRGGHHHHH!

I want to work in a floral shop, arranging the pretty, pretty flowers all day long and humming to myself !!

Tell your boss you want two peoples pay for doing two peoples jobs !!

If it works let me know !!

I had a friend in High School. His Mom had been at this major newspaper for years and years. Then she decided to retire and enjoy some quality time with Hubby, who was desperately ill.

She started out as a receptionist secretary in the beginning. Then someone left, and she took over their duties. Over time, another someone left, and she took over their duties. And again, about 10 years before she decided to retire, she inherited more responsibilities. She gave the paper a couple years notice that she was leaving so they could find someone to replace her. She knew her position had morphed into something very unique, and it would take a special person to fill the void. When the company worked with her to categorize her duties, they had no idea just how much work she actually did and how interdependent many departments and functions had come to rest on her. In the end, they hired 4, that's FOUR, people to replace her.

Sometime employers don't care. And sometimes they just aren't aware. Especially when they have a really good, responsible person working their fanny off to get the job done!!

      Hang in there Staci!!

I'll be ok! I do like my job. It is frustrating, because I'm one link in the chain and if those before me don't do right or don't send things in on time (which they don't, though some are worse than others) then that holds me up, which holds the accountants up, which holds up the month end financials that have to go to the owners... ARRRGGGGGJHHJHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
