    question about cell phones

My parents have a family plan for their phones, for years now they have always given me one of the phones. Well they just updated their contract and everyone got the new Razr phones...lol Mine's pink....hee hee

Anyway...I still have my old one, which is now useless cause we switched over my existing number. Now I am sitting here with my new one and the old extra one.
Can I switch the old one to a pay-as-you go?? I would like to give it to my friend (her husband is not husband material , and I would feel better if she had one). If so what do I do? How much do they charge for the conversion? I would like to be able to just buy the mins from Walmart if possible. Can I take it to any dealer?

my old phone is the: LG Cingular G4010

    thanks

What a lovely thing you are trying to do for your friend, PA - she's very lucky to have you as a friend.

About.com has some insights about activating used cell phones...they aren't very 'rah rah' about it - http://cellphones.about.com/od/thece...given_used.htm

Still worth checking with Cingular and WalMart to see what they might be able to do with your phone. Good luck - hope it works out for your friend's sake!
I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice nor a statement of the law - only a lawyer can provide those.

Our local women's shelters convert old cell phones

They take donations of used phones and program them with emergency numbers for the use of abused women and their children. Depending on what your friend's situation may be developing into, you may want to see if there is an organization near you doing similar work.

      Nice gesture on your part!

There are a few towns around here that recycle old cells into emergency ones, I am turning my parent's two phones into our local Crisis center. So that makes me feel better.

However I wanted her to have mine old one for herself and for piece of mind...KWIM?

I'm just wondering, can a regular phone be turned into a pay-as-you-go? Otherwise I will turn my phone into the Crisis center as well.

It depends on if you have a sim card that is removeable or one that is soddered in.

Chances are no you can not.

The sim card is removable. So does that mean it can be changed to a prepay?

well I called Cingular...and talk to the rep. He said ANY phone, will dial 911 even if it does not have service agreeement/contract (AS long as it is charged)..so that is good to know!!

About my phone, he said they have to remove the sim card and replace it which is about $25, then it can be done as a prepay/pay-as-you-go. So that is not too bad.

              Thanks for everyones input.
