Mortgage Co wants me to pay for their lawyers

My mortgage company apparently hired a lawyer during my Chapter 7 (why?!) and they sent me a bill for $175. Am I responsible for this? I've ignored them and they've left me alone so far, but I have a feeling another letter is right around the corner! Anyone else have this happen to them?

What did the letter say the $175 bill is for?
I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice nor a statement of the law - only a lawyer can provide those.

We didn't have to pay the Lender's legal fees for BK, but we did for our Foreclosure.

We dodged the bullet with a last minute offer that saved us from our house being auctioned on the Court House steps.

Our Lender added all interest, late fees, penalties, AND their Legal costs on top of our principal balance.

Just personal opinion here, but,......... I'd bet you will be responsible for "repaying" your Lender their legal costs to CYA them on your behalf.

And of course, you don't know to expect it until after. Or else you coulda included it in your listing of debts to be discharged.
      Filed Ch 7 - 09/06
      Discharged - 12/2006
Officially Declared No Asset - 03/2007
      Closed - 04/2007

I am not an attorney. My comments are based on personal experience and research. Always consult an attorney in your area to address concerns related to your particular situation.

The letter was very vague and I had to go through about 4 people who had no clue what I was talking about until I was transferred to the bankruptcy department. The bankruptcy department was closed and I just ignored/forgot about it after that. My case was discharged in October of 2005 and I didn't get a letter until a few weeks ago. I was current on my mortgage, I reaffirmed, so I have no idea why they felt the need to have an attorney.

Ummmm....let me take a wild guess, rangermom....it's absolutely free money for your mortgage company just for sending out a letter? [sarcasm, folks ] Think about it....if your mortgage company's lawyer on retainer's staff sends this very same letter out to hundreds and hundreds of of their debtors who are in bk and even if pnly 20% of them pay it, that's some serious cash in return for a few letters and some postage at the corporate rate. (The "greed is good" crowd strikes again.)
