    What is your hobby

Let’s get to know one another better. Let’s find out what our member’s hobbies may be.

    I will go first………..

My hobby is music. I have been a drummer since the age of 12 (I will be 34 next month). However, I played air drums for a very long time before……ROFL! Playing drums was all I could think about. It was all I wanted to do. I had such a desire to play, that at the age of 11, I made and built my own drum set. Now, I’m not talking about getting Mom’s pots and pans out folks. I mean I made the drums, cymbals, pedals and stands myself. It took me months to do and I wouldn’t let anyone see them. My Dad had remodeled our basement and there was a small room made (like an in-law suite) and I had the door pad-locked. I spent most of my summer in that room. When I was finished with the build, my parents finally got their first look and they were absolutely stunned. Not only was each drum round and were the correct sizes, but I also had working pedals for the bass drum and the hi-hats. I even made the cymbals out of some sheet metal I got. What was even more shocking was, I even made my own drumsticks………ROFL!!!!! That’s how bad I wanted to play. For the next few months, I would bang away everyday after school until I my parents would say, “Okay, that’s enough.” “It’s getting late.”

That following Christmas, I woke up that morning to find a real drum set by the Christmas tree. It was the real deal……..REAL DRUMS……REAL CYMBALS……….REAL WORKING PEDALS……….AND YES, REAL DRUMSTICKS. It was the greatest gift I have ever received. There were also a number of other gifts for me to open that morning, but I could have cared less about them. I wanted to play those drums! It was the greatest day of my life!

I have been playing drums ever since that day. It’s been 22 years now (not counting my days playing air drums…..LOL) and I still enjoy it. Of course I drive my wife crazy with it sometimes, but she understands it’s my passion.

I also play the bass guitar. I started playing the bass guitar about 2 years ago. This was one of those things I wanted to try out, but I didn’t realize I would enjoy that as well. I’ve tried a few other instruments as well over the years, but lost interest. Although, I’m proud to have at least given them a try. Anyways, playing bass is cool, but I’m not as serious about it as I am with drums. I’ll sit and learn a song on drums and I’ll work at it until I’ve mastered it, but with the bass guitar, if I don’t get it, I’ll set that song aside for another day.

My drum set is a 9-piece TAMA Rockstar with 4 Paiste Signature Series cymbals and Paiste Signature Sound-Edge Hi-Hats. I also use a double bass pedal (not 2 bass drums) and I can get 240 beats per minute on the bass drum (sounds like a machine gun). My bass guitar is a Yamaha 5-String jazz bass. The 5th string on the bass is for playing music tuned to Drop ‘D’, like Nickleback for example.

All right members, what are your hobbies?

    GREAT STORY...................

    MY HOBBIES????

WELL, KEEPING YOU ALL IN LINE AND BEATING OFF THE TROLLS IS A MAJOR ONE THESE DAYS............LOL

Many hobbies over the llast 40 years, kind of go from one to another and back again....

    1. Arts and crafts - love to take junk and make something usefull out of it.
I'm a pack rat sometimes and make all kinds of things out of someone
elses junk and throwaways. Then I sell them
    2. Wood - often build different things for yard and home (my first end tables
were big wooden spools (like wire comes on) with formica on top and
leather around the base..... Lasted over 30 years... Have sold some
    of these peices also.
    3. Refinishing furniture and old peice of wrought iron.
    4. Had my own craft and floral shop for a while - specialty items only....
floral arrangements (silk) crafty items for the home.. Nice part time
    business for many years.
    5. landscaping - constantly working on this, adding things and peices
(love waterfalls - right now have 4 inside and outside my home)
    6. Sewing - used to make my own clothes, pillows, drapes, etc. Made my
own designer cocktail dresses in my younger years.
    7. Photography - still photos - animals and scenery
    8. Computer stuff - designing programs - building photo galleries, etc
    9. Gardening (a little these days)
    10. Music - am an avid music buff...... always music going no matter what
    I'm working on.

So as you can see, I love hobbies, have many interests (including my dogs) and over the years have dabbled in all of them... When I get bored with one I go to another and then back again....

Everybody needs a hobby....... no matter what it is. I think using your creative mind or energy makes you a more rounded person in life....

How people can watch TV, hour after hour, day after day, I'll never know....
Of course they are TV buffs and that is their hobby....... but I can't sit still that long....LOL...

      Beading!

Before I had children back in the mid '90's, I used to do juried art shows on Anna Maria island, Longboat Key and Siesta Key. I was taught how to bead by a little lady who has since passed on, Irene, from the Anna Maria Island Art League. I do believe I was one of her best students. I do necklaces and earrings in size 11 (reg size seed bead) and size 14(real small). I work in round, hex, peyote stitch, you name it, if I don't know it I can learn it....Have a whole album of my art show experience....

I got started beading after seeing the beautiful art work that went on at Dead shows...my anklets were my best sellers with the little bells....I have a leg that I got at a flea market that one of my friends put on a brace on a wood block so the anklets hang just like they were supposed to on the ankle...$25 and they go like hot cakes....

I've bought beads all around the country but my favorite bead store: Sedonna Beads in AZ. Just amazing...I came home with every color imagineable....

I learned to use a Canon AE1 35mm in order to take slides to gain entry into the show so I guess photography is another hobby....(have a whole box of photos of my counter-culture experience (a nice way to put it) back in 2000-2002 complete with police cruisers....that will go well with my film....hmmmm....

I think, in fact, this would be a great time to get back to beads & do some shows this winter!...beading keeps you from snacking....

What else? I write when I feel moved. I have about 30 pages dsp of my street experience so far...haven't written since last summer but I should make it a point to write a chapter a week right now...

[B]READING[B] I'm currently in the middle/end of Eddie, my life, my loves (Eddit Fisher) and Why I committed Suicide by Sam Paul.

[B]GYM[B]I like to do my eliptical machine M-TH...no exercis on F, S or S...those are days that are mine...to do with as I please.

MOVIESon IFC or Sundance...love those channels...no commercials and there's just terrific shows on...

I gues I have more going on than I thought (not just another addict!) An intense one!

          Questionable hobby

I dont have any real hobbies. I do like doing something that I bet someone else finds a popular past time. Our area is so sick of those Asian beetles. They look just like lady bugs and stink when you touch them. Smell is a musky odor. Anyhow many of us have spray bottles filled with a tad of dishwasher soap. if you spray down a hugh group of them (hundreds) they choak on it die off and fall to the ground. Yesterday I saw three other neighbors walking around with the bottles. I guess it is a hobby for us guys and it beats having them flying inside the house. They are attracted to warm spots so they tend to group on the west outside wall of the house at night.

Great idea to start this thread, BassBoy! And now we all know where your name came from...cool!

            My hobbies:
            * First and foremost, I'm a passionate photographer! Started shooting film in my late teens - have many albums plus tons of slides and negatives from the last 30 years stored away. Then eight years ago I got my first digital camera and I was hooked - haven't shot a roll of film since! I'm rarely without my digital camera and find interesting and beautiful things all around me to photograph every day. I've been an administrator on several photo websites and been a judge for online photo contests for years. Friends and people who see my online photo gallery and photo blog tell me I should sell my photos. Maybe I'll consider it once our bk is over (don't want to be adding on income during Ch 13! )

            * I love gardening! I'm allergic to pesticides, so I garden without them. This year we have two kinds of tomatoes, three kinds of peppers, green beans, snap peas, and a wide variety of herbs. Summertime eating is fantastic with our own fresh veggies and herbs from the garden right in our own backyard.

            * I love the Net! As most of you have probably figured out already, digging out information related to the questions here so we can all benefit from them is something I really enjoy doing. Having the world's largest information library right at my fingertips - I'm like a cat in catnip!

            * I love to read! I travel a fair amount for my job, so I always take along a book on tape or mp3 or a real-life paper book and read in airports and on the plane. My favorites are autobiographies, non-fiction, humorous stories, and (of course) books and magazines on photography!

            * I love to cook! Homemade breads by hand are my specialty - I love it when our house is fragrant with the smell of baking. Now if I could just figure out a way to make everything calorie-less....lol!

              1. I play ice hockey in a local men's league. I have played for 12 years, and still love it as much as when I started.

              2. Haven't golfed much since moving to Tennessee, but I am starting to get the urge again.

LOL, this works well for boxelder bugs too. This would be my sons idea of a hobby as they are always asking if they can "shoot" the bugs. Keeps them busy for a long time.

Great thread bass, I am trying to think what I have that I can actually call a hobby.....

I scrapbook when I get the chance. I have three children so it's kind of never ending.

Stamping kind of goes with the scrapbooking but I haven't done much lately

I REALLY like to decorate houses. Picking paint and furnishings and decor. Every house I go into for this or that reason, I am always looking around at all their stuff and colors.

Shopping-which is maybe part of the reason I am part of this forum

I do like to do stuff in the garden but am not much of a greenthumb at all.

I do like to cook but I like to cook for entertaining purposes. Probably because my kids usually don't like what I cook unless it's mac and cheese and hot dogs.

Parties-I LOVE to entertain. If ever anyone in either of mine or my husbands family needs a baby shower or wedding shower or whatever, I am always the first to volunteer.

C'mon now, don't be shy. (giggle)

Lately my only hobby has been BK research but I think eventually I'll return to pre-BK activities. Fortunately, most are low cost!

I participate in historical re-enactment. Got into it with my dad when I was a teen growing up in Louisiana and continue it presently. Great fun and very helpful to "escape" reality...at least for a weekend at a time. Otherwise, only real hobby is reading and online gaming. Became a FPS fanatic a while back and still like to jump online and frag in my free-time. I always wanted to take up an instrument...maybe that'll be a nice, low-cost hobby for a Ch. 13'er....

I love music, too, and have been playing the piano since the 2nd grade. I was trained classically and "specialized" in music from the Baroque period (Bach, Scarlatti, etc.) as well as Ragtime. (I know, an odd combination!) At this point in my life there is little time to practice and much of my piano playing involves accompanying my husband and children who sing very well.

My aunt taught me to enjoy cooking and entertaining at a young age and I still love that. I have to be careful as some recipes can easily add up to a lot of money! I do love good chocolate and a nice red wine.

This is my favorite time of year as I am a football fanatic!!! I am the only woman on my block that gets depressed after the Super Bowl. I live for football season and have my designated spot on the sofa that nobody better take when the game is on. I actually understand the game and think if I'd been male, I'd have been a great linebacker.

I love to travel and love to do volunteer work; one of my most memorable experiences was volunteering for an ecumenical prison ministry for women inmates. I was truly humbled and blessed by that experience.

BassBoy, this is a great thread!!! Thanks for starting it.

My hobby is sweepstakes. This can be a costly hobby, however more and more sweeps can be entered online. I have won lots of small items. Waiting for the BIG ONE. My friend who shares this hobby won a Disney trip for 4 last year. She took me and we had a blast. Airfare, rental car, park tickets and a stay at the Deluxe Disney resort, the Boardwalk. Of course she had to pay taxes on retail value.
