    collection agencies

    Hello Everyone,

Recently I was checking my wife`s credit report and found a collection account that we had no idea existed. We challenged the debt with the three credit reporting agencies and one deleted the entry and the other two are in dispute.

I sent the agency a demand for proof of the debt and they sent us a statement from a company in San Francisco that we have no idea what this is. I believe my next step is to send a letter stating that they did not provide any proof and we have no idea what the debt is. We will request signed invoices to back up their statement.

I guess I am surprised how shabby their work is and see how a lot of folks will simply pay a bill to get rid of it. They have a powerful tool being able to slam someone`s credit file on such little proof.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

it use to be the agencies had 30 days to resolve the dispute and then they must remove the entry. i don't know if that still is the case, i believe it is.

this type of thing happens all the time. incorrect information on one's credit report seems to be more the "norm" nowadays unfortunately, leaving us to fight the incorrect information. i would send the other two agencies a certified letter demanding removal of the entry or you will file a complaint. we have had a few of these happen to us, but after sending out a demand for removal letter they were removed. especially if they have had ample time to research (30 days) and still have not concluded their investigation.
