BKFORUM.com (BKF) users agree to use the search function before starting a new thread. This prevents duplicate discussions and allows for better organized topics.

All BKF users agree to read the sticky posts which may be available at the top of a forum page. These Sticky posts often contain valuable information. They may also outline more rules and guidelines specific for that particular forum, stickies are put in place by that forums moderator(s) or admin(s).

Things you agree not to do:

All BKF users agree not to call people names or write a post simply to make a personal attack, or get a negative reaction; this behavior is not allowed on our forum. The use of derogatory language aimed at anyone will be severely dealt with. There is no need to agree with each other, or to even like each other. However, by signing onto BKForum.com you agree to treat each member and guest with the respect they deserve. No threats or personal attacks will be allowed.

If you wish to discuss bans or warnings please do so via PM. To place a complaint against a moderator, send a PM to a super moderator. All Moderators are equal, any decision made by a moderator must be adhered to. If a moderator tells you something you do not like, do not go to another moderator looking for a different answer. If you are caught doing this you will be banned. The moderators work as a team and respect the decisions made by their peers and will help enforce them unless an administrator tells them differently.
If you have an issue with how the forum is run, then notify one of our administrator and we will look into the situation. I'm not sure what you mean about spending more money. So, sorry if I am misunderstanding.

The idea is to assign each dollar of your inflow to a category, but that certainly doesn't mean you have to spend it right away -- or at all.

It has made me NOT spend very much money at all, because I've created categories for things I see coming -- like the $450 of kids' book fees in September, and the $190 of taijutsu in August.

Let's just say we wanted to go to the movies tonight. It forces me to think of the budget -- where I can see that every penny already has somewhere to go -- and think, what are we going to NOT be able to afford in the future, for what we want to do *right now*?

If you mean that you are spending more money than you should because you can't see the effect on the budget *in real time* -- you may be better off entering things manually for awhile and linking your bank account later, when you have a better feel for things.

My transactions generally are available for import around 9-9:30 am if they are showing cleared on my bank's site. Pending transactions will not import. It was a real eye opener for me, lunches and dining out were big wastes for me too, I couldn't believe how much I was spending in those when I first started tracking.

If nothing is showing available for import, you can re-establish the connection to your account. Click the pencil icon on the account when you hover over it, then click the pencil icon again next to the credentials area. I would also open a support ticket with YNAB if it keeps happening. Imports go pretty smoothly for me, they are almost always there ready to import by 9 or 9:30, except for the weekends and Monday morning.

I think an important part of YNAB is to use the app and enter the transactions as you spend. I don't think the system will work too well if you just spend and wait for the transactions to import, this is due to the delay of the transactions posting to your account. For me this allows me to see if I have the money on hand in that category to be spending.

When I import that just gives me the chance to make sure I entered everything correctly, and it picks up those transactions I forgot to enter. I also reconcile every day. I waited months before my first reconcile and it was a mess.

We were doing that and it created a lot of duplicates. I guess I didn't delete the ones I had entered after the import. More importantly - I didn't understand the whole import bit.

I could see the need to use the app if we had any extra money and were out "shopping"..... But I don't see that picture for our family for a long time. We're going to the store with a detailed list of must-haves, lining up sales and coupons before we go, and then putting blinders on to everything else in the store.

So, bankruptbull, you're saying you manually enter transactions -- and then when they import, you just delete the ones you already have?

YNAB performs a matching when you import if you are entering transactions manually. This gives you a chance to make sure you didn't enter the transaction wrong. But, no, no deletions required, it'll just match what you've entered along with what your bank has.

That is the problem. I don't think i knew how to match the items correctly. so i had duplicates and i was reconciling like crazy and i had to zero down a budget that should not have come up frequently when that happened. it was more frustrating than anything. I didn't find their videos helpful to understanding this - i watched so damn many. I'm using YouTubers to figure it out!

I am entering transactions manually, now that we are having more of them. You're right -- the delay was bugging me now! So I just used the "match" feature for the first time, and that's great. Thanks again for all of your help. I feel really good about this program!

I wanted to update this thread - YNAB just did a major update to their mobile apps. I will definitely be renewing my subscription when it expires, I am a student and was lucky to get a free year as a student.
