The Long Term Unemployment Problem May Be About To Look Much Worse

    Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

The Bureau of Labor Statistics announced changes to rules on how it calculates long-term unemployment Tuesday, according to The Hill. The changes will expand the BLS’ ability to calculate unemployment for those beyond 99 weeks. Now, there will be a new box to tick, one saying 260 weeks or over unemployed. That’s a box no one wants to tick, but many may have to. This new stat is likely to give a much better view of the structural unemployment problem than the 27 week chart we have right now. About time. No matter how much it hurts, we need to see the real truth. If the real amount of unemployed is 17 or 18%, then show it, and explain what that higher number really is (e.g. over 99 weeks and off UI, those that have given up looking for work, and those that took part time jobs and McDonalds or Walmart in order to avoid going homeless).

I have been officially unemployed for about 8-1/2 years (had about $2K in various off-the-books gigs, none during a time I was collecting UE benefits.) I guess that even a master's degree from Georgia Tech will not keep someone from being unemployable.

surly doesn't. i'm not going back for a 4th degree and then do what??? nothing.

interesting little story. we have been calling about to get a piano tuner, and most that have called back wanted over $200....way off our budget. anyway, yesterday afternoon we get a call it's from a gentleman, who later tells me he's 70 years old. he gave a price of $90, that was something we can afford to do this month, so that worked for us. after making the date for him to come out, i would like to tell you he broke out in "song". but, he didn't. he began to rant and rant and rave about how this world has gone crazy, and how can this government expect people to live with the price of food and gas and on and on. he said he's been managing on his ss, he thought if he could tune 3 pianos a week he'd be fine. he said we were his first call in over 5 months. that was his life's plan. ss and tune piano's. he went on to say; at 70 years old now what do i do?? what can i do???

i felt worst for him, than i did for us!!! after all, my mom gave us the piano last month, and we were thrilled, actually blessed to receive such a lovely old fine gift!

all i know, is i will make certain i make a wondrous lunch for this poor man. and, give him is $90 in cash.

Thanks for doing that for him Tobee. Gads - what is this world coming to??? You'd think at 90 he'd be covered somehow. Just makes me shudder to think how dire our straits are.
