HelpMe, You said this a thousands times better then I ever could have. Both my husband and I (we were both upper management professionals) lost our jobs during the recession, it took hubby 13 months to find a temporary job that only lasts 6 months and thankfully I have just found a high level management job. While hubby continues to look and hopes he can find something prior to his 6 months ending in August we would not have made it, if not for unemployment.

Unless the wealthy want to support everyone else things need to change and that change needs to happen NOW...

I believe for example unemployment extensions should not be cut off for people who lost their jobs during the recession. There is no time line as to how long it takes to find a job. I have run across many republicans who called me lazy and demanded my benefits be cut after 6 months. Had that happened, I would have ended up homeless, then never been able to find a job. Or they said get a job at McDonalds or Walmart. Do you honestly think those two companies would hire a business professional like me. No, because they know the second I find that higher paying job, I would bolt. Plus, honestly, that is not enough money to even survive, period.

I now have a very high paying job and have been paying a boat load in taxes. But I am happy to pay the taxes.

Until the economy returns and the companies begin hiring and the unemployment rate drops to normal, you can't cut off the unemployment extensions for the unemployed, or kill medicare and social security which will destroy most of the retireees. All this while giving billions and now wanting to give over a trillion to the wealthy? This is morally wrong on all levels.

I am still looking. I was laid off Oct 2008, had one part time temp job for 6 months in 2009 and another 4 month temp job in 2010-11. Nothing since. Thanks to the bk, I think I could live on next to nothing and have dummied my resume down in the hopes I can even get a receptionist job. I no longer care what I would be paid, anything would be more than unemployment, although I am so very grateful I still am getting that, but not for much longer I'm afraid.

At 57, with my work history, I have had some interviews but the minute they see my age (hard to disguise wrinkles), I get passed over. Unsure what will happen if I do not find a job - I just keep banking the unemployment and am staying in my house until if forecloses, which has not even started yet. I am thankful for that.

If I can even find a low paying job, because of my age I can get into senior housing once my house forecloses, but not even that without a job.

We all just have to pray for our nation.

we are the point, that we are just giving up. no one is going to hire us, so we are hiring ourselves. i'm picking up some work, but it's not daily, it's mostly monthly, and i have had a few unemployment hearings i did, but other than that, no law firm is hiring. none.

if we took a low paying job, it would cost too much in gas and travel and end up costing us. we just heard our energy company got another raise while in the 3 years we have been in the area it's over doubled in cost. just awful.

        i'm praying very day.....

This is where I luck out as we have wonderful transportation here. Except, the one job that was a possibility was not on a bus line so had to decline to interview. My car is too old to be dependable and I have to work somewhere I could bus to in case the car gives up.

I'm still looking and won't give up but when the house forecloses may move to another state. Until then, I keep sending in apps and hoping something happens. Still getting UI because working at the temp jobs extended my time but that will not last forever.

I have to add my bit just because I consider myself the queen of layoffs. I've been laid off for budget cuts, department eliminations, mergers, even had a business owner move the business to another state. My relatives tend to pity me. They can't understand how someone like myself with advanced education can have such consistently bad luck. I'm trying to think if I ever quit a professional job. Actually, I haven't.

Someone mentioned that unemployment should go on indefinitely. I disagree with that on a personal level. I agree that it should be longer than 6 months. In a couple of cases, it took me more like 7-9 months to finally get a real job again. Unemployment also should not be calculated with the latest pay in consideration being 3 months or further back in time. The 1st time I was unemployed, it meant I got $107 a week. My rent was $475/mo, so clearly the UE comp didn't do much. But at the same time, and I write this as someone who has effectively been unemployed/underemployed for almost 5 years now, unemployment shouldn't go out more than maybe about 18 months absolute max. I was really happy initially when I got that first extension Congress approved because when I was unemployed 8 years ago, I was able to get UE comp for 8 months before it ran out (and thankfully finally got a real job starting a month after!). I felt like when Congress had decided to cut it to no more than 6 months that just really screwed people like myself who are just chronically unlucky. But then I kept getting more extensions and feeling uneasy. With each extension (at least in my state) they make people come in for a class where a guy basically puts everyone down and insinuates that they are lazy, that they need to sell their houses, that they need to suck it up and work for half or less than what they made in the job that laid them off last. But aside from that, there's really no realistic help unless you are lucky enough to be from an occupation that the state deems to be in serious decline, then you can get the state to pay to retrain you for something else. I've actually felt better about myself for having all extensions run out, just getting a crappy temp job doing warehouse work, and just otherwise trying to plug along attempting to get a job. But, anyway....

I've gotten rejected because I'm overqualified quite a few times. I even had one call a reference and the ref then told me the employer thought I'd get bored.

I've never managed people as a regular part of any job and that probably eliminates me from consideration in many professional level positions. But seriously, I hate hate hate the concept that everyone has to try to be a chief! What about being a really really good team member instead? Why do companies seem to think a person of advanced education is not worth hiring if they have zero desire to ultimately try to take over the company one day????

I've been passed over more times than I probably know about for not having my degree at the local big wig university. As a result I hate their sports team and always cheer on their rival. I had someone tell me years ago that I should just take a couple classes so I can get access to their career placement services. #1 problem -- I still wouldn't have a degree with their institution name on it which would probably still be the reason in some cases that I wouldn't be hired. #2 problem -- So to "join them" if I can't "beat them", I have to resort to extortion to get in the club? I'm still at no thanks on that. I'd rather move out of the state. Still subtly working on that angle as I'm married and am not the main opinion on these things.

I absolutely hate the whole concept of having to fill out applications which are frequently around 6+ pages long while also being required to submit my resume. But I submit anyway.

Oh, and I've been rejected by Walmart even after spending nearly an hour taking their horrendous situational test. You know, nightmare stuff like "A coworker seems to be doing x wrong. Do you A. tell the supervisor, B. take the coworker aside to tell them the correct way, C. say nothing to coworker or supervisor and hope it resolves itself" type of crap. That's a huge oversimplification, but it's a nightmare for me. Some bosses want people to rat out the bad workers, some bosses want the underlings to duke it out amongst themselves. I don't know if I just failed the test or if I failed because I indicated that I have a masters degree on the fill in application. But whoever thinks getting a job at Walmart is super easy obviously hasn't tried this convoluted system of the past few years I think.

And I've been rejected by Target too. I've been rejected by Jamba Juice. I've been rejected by assorted coffee barista establishments. I've had very little luck with low wage temp agency stuff. So it's not like even the minimum wage jobs are easy to get.

Anyway, that's my rant for the day.

The online jobs are nowadays too much famous for they are proven but more struggle is needed to earn from it and some of them also cost a little admission fee

Y'know, if we break this up into smaller lines, it could probably be a haiku.

On another vBulletin forum that I moderate on, there were a few days that they were registering as fast as I could ban them. It is insane.

It was for $12 an hour and maybe that was the test because they did not hire me, thank Godf!
I wouldn't underestimate that the companies are just incompetent at hiring. I've worked for companies in the past, where the HR department had no real idea how to write the job description, so they didn't get the applicants they were looking for, and the ones they did get weren't really qualified. On top of that, some job postings are put out there before funding for the job is even approved. So the company just keeps reposting the listing until upper management approves the increase in budget, and then they already have 100s of resumes to sift through.

I worked for a company that kept posting the same position, because they were growing and needed additional help in that area...
