So very true - sounds like an addict of sorts and we all know that to change, an addict must hit rock bottom, having no one to turn to that will bail them out as has been done so many times before. Sounds like your friend needs to hit rock bottom in order to come to the reality of her situation.

Sorry you and the Mrs. had to endure such a thing - been there, done that.

Yes Pandora, this person has lived high much of her life and with a couple divorces that has changed. She is a bit older than I, a diabetic, and a hoarder. For what she has in boxes she could sell at flea market prices and pay her taxes. You did catch that this is the second three year default in land taxes. If the mortgage holder does not escalate the mortgage, the place will be sold for taxes. All she treasures in boxes she cannot find her things. She has a path in her house to navigate between filled walls. Three out buildings and the garage full of boxes. She cannot live long enough to do what she says she will do "some day". Some stranger from an auction after her death will just sell it all anyway or toss what is crap out. She cannot part with "stuff". I offered her fair market on a S & W 38 of her Dad's. Can't sell that, it was her Dad's. No bullets in it but can't sell it. That would at least pay for one year of unpaid tax. She is going to fall, but I cannot take her my way. I've done that too much. What I have learned is this: "To thine own self be True". We are suffering the bankruptcy recovery routine like everyone else. It costs about 50 to 100 to go to a nice restaurant these days. We have done without for years and a treat is a once in while pizza, or Walmart has a great two person sandwich for $6. It is called "self control". It works every time it's tried.

Once she was relieved of those responsibilities, what do you think she would use the extra cash for? A savings? Stockpiling staples and essentials? It would not H E L P her. It would harm her more. She sold a piece of land at the time her Mother passed away, and inherited another mobile home and lot with garage. Whatever cash for the sale went, I do not know. Then she went out to get a max mortgage on the free and clear mobile home on lot to pay back taxes that her Mother had??? She borrows SEVENTEEN THOUSAND dollars to pay a $1,800 (I think that's less that 2k) leaving FIFTEEN THOUSAND dollars to pay off all her bills. CCs maxed out no doubt, and now cannot get a CC (I wonder why?) but if she could, she would use it to pay the land taxes? What would she now use to pay that CC?

Don't worry IAO, you certainly were not a terminal case of credit. Some people are, and this one is. Now she has tossed those friends to the wind in spamming her email beg to every friend, family she has. If I had the extra money I would pay for Nolo's C13 book, but now I don't even wish to call her or advise her about bankruptcy. I told her about this forum and if and when she reads this thread, she will know how I feel. If I told it to her face all I would do is harm to a person who is self destroying without more help from me to make her feel worse. 'Hub
hub, you're such a sweet guy. personally, and i think i can say this to you in public....YOU CAN NOT HELP everyone.

people on this forum don't even know the half of what kind of person you are. (like the kind the offers to get a computer to a sick friend in need... that person i know will never forget such kindness ;)) and, i know the underlying part of this, is most likely you feel badly you can't help her. although, i understand very clearly your point, that even IF you did, she would never learn the lessons she now needs so badly to understand and apply to her daily living. actually, by helping her you, or anyone she's requesting to help her, it would enable her to continue on with the same behaviors that got her where she is now.

Tobee you are so kind to say those words. I have to admit, I have a "Savior complex". When we had some money say about 2000 and before we supported three lawyers, we helped people get a start from Prison. Mrs. once worked as a supervisor Librarian in an institution. We got several out who were homeless. A couple went right onto crack. We broke that habit, got her clean, put one of them back in due to violations. We had Department of Corrections implied powers and under our sponsorship we were 70% successful. Two of who I call my step-daughters are still living on our property in a cabin I built them. Now they help us with rent and yard work and are clean and dry. They work as they wish on telemarketing and make very good money and they gamble and win. Yes, they were a couple and still are. They legally married in Hawaii.

When we had cash we used to do up more turkey than needed and dropped baskets to some on the street (home less). BK taught us one thing, what goes from you comes back to you. Both the good and the bad. Call it Karma. I call it God.

Now with no money, being here on this Forum we have had a great satisfaction of not only learning and becoming less ignorant than when we bked. Helping here does not cost me a red penny. A bit of time, research and a very good feeling when we can play a hamster dance for a project person whom we met first post. What a reward and much more lasting than giving a "thing" or "stuff" to a person who then expects this kind of bail out and learns no lesson.

We learned from BK that in the blink of an eye, by accident, legal cause, death in family, sickness, that your World can change. I thank my Lord for every good day. There is no bad days in my life. Happiness is a choice. You make it so daily by choice. My glass is half full, not half empty as I appreciate now more than ever what I have. My age still blesses me with good health. We have our home paid, we are saving money for emergencies (not hand outs), we enjoy cooking as we cannot afford to eat out. We know 100 ways to make hamburger dishes. But, most of all, Mrs. and I have each other and appreciation for that. 'Hub

'Hub

Well you all know how much I despise these skankster, banksters and their schemes, but anyone that uses these products must stay away from this junk at all costs!

This country has a huge national debt for a reason. We give welfare to pretty much anyone that needs it including the uber wealthy.

Anyone desperate enough to need these loans should just apply for govt assistance as opposed to getting caught in the payday loan trap feeding more banksters.
The essence of freedom is the proper limitation of Government
