Is there a particular reason why your State is now "mandatory"?

Uhm... while I have no problem saying where I'm from if asked.... I'm curious to know why it is now mandatory to list where you are located in the US??

Seems like a tracking tool to me... and it shouldnt be on this forum IMO. If people want to divulge where they are located openly, that should be up to them.

well....i see that too!!...and changed it...and now i have NO CLUE where i'm from...because i never heard of that place..

i'm don't mind mentioning it either on a forum...but i actually was "redirected" to a place that i HAD to fill it out!

The reason is that knowing state can help when answering users' questions, since bk laws differ.

If you think that there are many users who don't want share their state, I could maybe add a new state Private

yes, laz, that may be very well true...however, for an example in this very state i'm in...it varies from not only county to county and district to district...so to simply say i'm located in florida in the "middle" district would not necessary we helpful to someone...let say in the miami area...or the tampa area.

that is for certain, and actually in my general location it goes ONE step beyond districts and is broken down further to counties....confused... the heck out of ME which may presently NOT be that difficult to do

..but that's simply the way it goes in this state...while one would like to think it would generally be helpful, in this state it could be hurtful...i.e. UI is exempt in some areas and NOT in other areas ....even in the SAME district...go figure.

I too was concerned about the intrusiveness of the lock out forcing me to advertise my state. But what the heck, I'm already in hot water with my opinion of these changes. LAZ asked, I am only doing what he requested and that is to give one man's opinion.

I gave my state when I originally signed up for the forum. I had no problem doing that but it was MY decision. I should have put down the state of confusion. But I am sure that you can lock down only certain states so that is a hole that LAZ can plug. I ran one of these chat rooms, not this software, but there was many things that could be done to restrict or open things. I dislike enforced encroachments and being a bit of a skip tracer, I once PMed a guy by his real name just because his "nick name" and location was a tip off where and who he was. All from Public Record. There is no anonymity on the Internet, but you can protect yourself by not willfully giving yourself away.

BTW, the person I PMed dared me, and so we are still friends and I had permission. I don't have the time to do that here or would I want to. For what purpose?

Laz has a point in the fact that knowing a state can be helpful but it can also be asked for and PMed of not wished to be displayed. Some here are in bk and divorce and that is double terror for some people who may not want their spouse to know where they are for example.

Here is an example. If I wished to find out where John Doe is, I need to know that he is John Doe, he is in bk, and he has moved to FL. Search on PACER in FL. All districts will spill out and I search the year 10 as it is in the case number. Now I have a mailing address. Easy peasy and how do you think the CA's find you? 'Hub

This is off topic but I once made the stupid mistake of responding to a pm (from another forum) from my phone and my phone states message sent from (insert full name here)! I was horrified. Then the person keep reponding to me using my full name. It was a little creepy.

I agree with Pandora (see sometimes we are on the same page). While there is probably a post or two where folks can figure it out (if they are that curious), I have given an incorrect location. In addition, some of the "regulars" probably already know.

This is an anonymous board. I am sure a number of my clients post here. As a result, if my location is routinely posted, theoretically those clients can figure out it's me, something I'd rather not happen. By the way, if any of you (my clients) have figured it out, please do not divulge the info or communicate with me outside of the normal channels. . . and certainly do not ask me specific questions relating to your case on this forum due to attorney/client privilege. Much appreciated.

                      Des.

I would rather like that option Laz - thank you.

I do agree that while knowing state exemptions etc are pertinent to BK - certain things do vary district to district within the same state.

Perhaps (if I may be so bold to suggest something since you are the owner...) you can simply bookmark/tag a site that has all states listed by a search option as to what applies ??? It still will say its district specific in most instances, however it may be a better option.
