I recommend Target for rebuilding Credit

I guess it's true what I have been hearing about Target.

They approved me for a card at Christmas time 2007. The initial credit limit was only $200 dollars.

I paid ontime for three billing periods and they just increased my credit limit this week. It got increased to $500 dollars.

So I will continue my good payment patterns because I hear that if you continue to have a good payment history they will eventually upgrade the 'red card' to a Target Visa.

Yes, they will upgrade you to a Visa in no time. But be careful...make sure you pay on time and get any errors on your account fixed immediately. Target is 'famous' for jacking up your interest rate because you paid late...even though you know you paid on time. I would recommend paying your bill at the store or online. Make sure all payments are credited timely. I've had some headaches with them...but overall...good.

Thank you bkdone. I have a little game I play with them. Whenever I have to go shopping there. I stop by the customer service counter and write a check for the full balance of the previous visit. That way I don't get caught up in running up a high balance. An old habit prior to filing bankruptcy. One more question. How long did it take before they converted your card to a visa?

I cant remember exactly, but it was maybe 6 months. It was totally unexpected and the card was upgraded to Visa, and mailed to my house. There was a letter that came that said my Red card would be deactivated, if I wanted it to be. I closed the red and kept the Visa.

Did you apply for a Target Visa after filing for BK, or did you already have a Target card that didn't get bk? Were you approved right away? Were your scores decent when you filed or were they still pretty low?

My husband is going to need to do some serious rebuilding and this would be a very good way if it is a no fee card and he will get approved despite the bk and a terrible credit score.

Same question: How long out of BK did you get the store card?

No, sorry...I wasnt clear... It was approved before the BK! Considering the name of this section is 'Rebuilding Credit After the Discharge...' I should have indicated that! My bad!

I didn't apply for a Target Card until two years after my filing. But if you're looking for something to start rebuilding credit quickly after a bankruptcy. Try CapitalOne and Orchard Bank. They were knocking on my door with pre-approval applications two weeks before my 341 hearing.
