    Cards that survive the bk?

How do you know? I have a Kohls charge mainly for the extra deals it gets me throughout the year. It had a zero balance when we filed, so it was not a creditor. I was never late on that card, rarely if ever carried a balance. I pretty much just use it to get the extra % off during certain sales and only bought what I could afford anyway.

How do I know if it survived or not? Do I just go to the store and try to charge something and hope not to be made a fool of? I don't want to call and ask because I'm afraid they will cancel it on the spot. What's the likelihood it will survive?

We bk basically all the major banks at least once if not a couple times - Chase, Citibank, etc. I assume Kohls is owned by one of those.

Smaller retail creditors that sponsor their own cards like Kohls and Penneys are more likely than the majors (MasterCard, Visa, etc) to let zero balance cards stay active after filing.

The only way to know for sure is to try and charge a small item. If it goes through, great. If it doesn't, then just smile and pull the cash out of your purse or pocket - no explanations needed.

Our Kohls card survived and did another one of my wife's cards.

They both had zero balances and are coming in handy to rebuild our credit.

The Kohls card is owned by Chase (who be bk'd), so I'm surprised it survived.

      Chapter 7 Filed - 11/27/07
      Discharged - 2/29/08
Unsecured Debt Discharged - $162k +/- (small business, personally guaranteed)
      Finally Closed - 3/1/09

Good for you. All the related cards that we bk'd on also got closed. Bank of America, Chase, Wamu, all closed despite zero balances. Only non-bk cards made it..............

Call them and ask what's the status of the card. Tell them you haven't used it for a while and just checking up. They'll tell you if it's closed.

I suppose you could try to charge something on it and see what happens. But, a quick call to the creditor will save you some embarassment.

Just dial the 1-800 number on the back of the card and check your credit limit and balance info etc.... using the automated system. It will say of the account is closed or not. I did this with my Kohl's and Discover Card to save the red face if it wouldnt work at the store in person.Penny's dropped me like a hot rock. 30 years never missed or late payemnt didnt file on them had a zero balance.......so much for loyalty.

Hi. What do you mean by non-bk cards? Were there cards that you did not list in your petition?

Just trying to make sense of it all.

              Thanks,

If you have cards that have a zero balance on them you do NOT have to list them on your bk petition, so I "think" that is what the poster meant by non-bk cards.

We had to list all open credit cards, having a balance or not. Two of them did not have balances and were paid off quite some time prior. The attorney told us that there is a good chance they will survive and if so we can keep them. We had to list them on our paperwork but they were not, of course, included in the filing or BK filed paperwork. They both survived (Dressbarn and a local auto parts store card) and we still have them to this day.

Hmm I was instructed by our lawyer that we only had to list creditors that we had a balance with. We had 6 accounts that had zero balances on them and he instructed us that we did not have list them. They were Shell(citi) Sears (citi) we both had home depot cards, direct merchants and lowes. All have remained open except home depot, they closed us right afyer the BK hit our reports.

I was also told to list all creditors, balance or not.
