    Renting after discharge

    Hi all,

    Me:
    California resident
Currently renting an apartment. Have positive rental history since 2006.
My Chapter 7 is done. Discharged CC debt and a medical bill.
Still have my car, kept the auto loan excluded from the BK.
Credit score was 690 before BK, score is now 606.

    I rent with a roommate, roomie's score is 720.

If we move and try to get a new place to rent, will we face major challenges?

    thanks in advance.

    It's certainly possible.

Prior to filing/discharge, I owned a home with my now ex-husband. I moved out of the home (because of the divorce), rented an apartment and stayed there for a year. When I rented that apartment, I was current on all of my bills, had not filed BK and had a credit score in the high 700s. When my apartment lease was up, I decided to move and find a different apartment and, by that time, I had filed BK and was waiting for my discharge. Apartment hunting after the BK was much more difficult and the only way I got my current apartment was by having a cosigner! Even though my credit score stayed in the mid 600s, had the same full-time job for over seven years and was over the apartment complex's income requirement, I couldn't get the apartment on my own.

I've read that renting a private home or an apartment from a smaller complex is sometimes easier. And, I should point out that the apartment I rented is probably considered to be somewhat upscale for my area. So, the fact that I rented a very nice, new apartment in a condo setting may have played a part in my difficulties.

Will your roommate also be signing the lease? If so, that may be your saving grace.

yes, my roommate would be signing with me to live with me. We are currently in an upscale area and paying a high rent considering the same units in the complex over the last year decreased by $200 per month, so we are paying more then what new tenants will get it for.

      thanks for your input.
