From the time a collection agency take on a bill ,how long before they are able to report it as a bad debt to the credit reporting agencies?I paid a doctor bill on november 11 , the first week in December a collection agency called inquiring about that bill. I told them it was paid to the doctors ,they sent me a bill and I paid them and gave them all the info. now my husband has this as a bad debt on his credit report????how is this possible?is it legal?????????????????

If they are reporting accurate info-then yes it is legal. I don't know if there are restrictions on how long to report, but they are supposed to send a written notice of the debt within 5 days of first contact.Most of my information is from personal experience or HOURS and HOURS of online research. When you're searching online, keep in mind there is no guarantee that the info is completely up to date, and your situation is unique from anyone else's. Do your homework, and consult with an attorney so you can make an informed decision.
