    student loan disaster

I don't know what to do... My wife and I got several private student loans to help us out financially while she was attending law school... All told, there's currently an outstanding total balance of $168,000 on the student loans. This is for both of us. Following the BK, AES will not allow a forbearance or deferral, and are wanting payments made. My wife is still in school, but since it's a private loan, they're saying sorry bout your luck, it's due, pay. The only downside is that she's got basically zero income at this time, and won't have until she graduates. I make about $2500 a month net. The minimum payment on the student loans is around $2200 a month. I don't know what to do. It's 2:30 am right now, and I am completely lost. All our other debt was discharged, and we've both just gotten one credit card each to help with the rebuilding, but it we're not able to come up with a solution, all this crap we went through with filing for BK isn't gonna help at all.
I can't get a second job, because I'm attending school as well, but part time, after work. We've got house payment, utilities and the two credit cards, which we pay off every month. Even so, it's about $800 a month worth of normal, everyday bills. That doesn't include groceries or gas.
What sort of options do we have? I swear we're about to say screw it and move to Canada.

I'm sorry to say that I don't have any words that will help but I do completely understand. I'm in the same situation myself--not to the same magnitude, thankfully, but it's still distressing. I've got both federally insured and private student loans through the same servicer. The federal loan is on an unemployment deferrment right now but not so the private piece. I'm somewhat stunned that there seems to be NO protection either temporary or permanant with private student loans. I get why governmentally backed loans shouldn't be dishchargable but to provide the same protection for the lenders on private loans only proves how slick an industry's lobbying can be.

Can you go for a hardship case? My understanding is that the court looks to potential future income as well so it might not work but it's probably worth investigating.

      Best of luck.
