    chapter 13

My boyfriend of 8 months has just told me that he is about to file for bankruptcy and I am very worried because I don't know how this will affect our future...buying a home, car, or taking out loans. Since I have great credit, does this mean everything will have to be in my name?

If you forsee a future with this guy....

....don't worry so much about the bankruptcy. If he already has problems that are sufficient to consider bankruptcy, his credit score is probably already shot. Many times a BK will help your score (assuming you follow good practices to rebuild your score, and there are great suggestions for just that on this board) and even though it stays on your record for 10 years, he can have an average score within about 2 if he plays his cards right. What I would worry about with him is what he did to get to where he needs to file. If it was something unforseen like medical issues or a layoff, this will get him back on his feet and I wish you both luck. If it was just massive spending or living beyond his means, you might want to make sure he has learned his lesson and won't go off the deep end again.

His BK wont affect you. Just don't go off and start co-signing loans for him, or start buying tons of things on credit for him under your name!

      Good Luck!
