    bankruptcy and living overseas

I am currently living in Japan and I am starting my research for bankruptcy.

Can someone tell me if I have to be in the states to file and complete everything or can it be done with me out of the country?

    Thank you

    filing from a foreign country

I thought my disability was temporary, but it has been 5 years now and I know I will not be able to return to work or pay my bills. Since US immigration law does not permit my gay partner of 8 years to immigrate, reside, or work in the US, we are forced to live in Mexico where my spouse can support us (megerly). I desperately need to file a chapter 7, so if someone give you the information you are looking for, please forward that to me via email at: [email protected]. I would really appreciate it!

      Filing Bankruptcy from Canada

I've been trying to find information on filing bankruptcy. I've lived in Canada for 3 years and the savings that I was using to pay my US debt is gone.

I have contacted numerous people from debt management counselors to lawyers and have received different answers. I have been told that I will have to appear in court where the bankruptcy is filed and that it must be filed in the state where it occurred, and then again I was told that since I am not a US resident, that I can not file for bankruptcy.

It is important that I get this settled, I want to repay the debt owed, however my employment situation will not permit it.

need answers about filing US bankruptcy while overseas

I have just come to the realization I will have to file bankruptcy. Like the others listed in this forum, I have been living overseas - in Ireland for five years- and will have to contact a bankruptcy lawyer in the states.

Do I have to file in the state I last lived in? Will I have to return to the states to appear in court? And can credit card companies serve me to appear while I live over here (they are threatening to). Will my bad debt in the states follow me here? And if so is there anything I can do about it now?

        Any help would be appreciated.
