    Speaking of student loans

I have not made a payment since October -- all loans w/ Sallie Mae. How far behind do you have to get before it starts messing w/ your rapid tax refund????

the company I worked for (NH higher ed) considered 9m payments behind as defaulted (and went to collections) and then it got messy with wage garnishment and such. I am pretty sure Sallie Mae follows the same timeline with the federal loans since the gov't sets the guidelines. I know my company sent out warning notices if you got close to default so watch for those.

Is it possible you could qualify for a forbearance or deferment? We had lots of options that were available to all federal loan borrowers. It's easier to get help with those than you'd think.

I haven't made a student loan payment since January, 2005...been either in forbearance or deferment or something since then..I'm currently working on another 12 month forbearance that will take me to December, 2008. As posted, student loan lenders will really work with you...they are pretty unbelievable actually...the thing is, they know that they will ALWAYS collect so they don't sweat it like a CC company would...
